Ah Trident. The biggest concern I have with the Lib Dems. That said I agree with them on the point that a nuclear deterrent is no longer as effective against the threats we face as it once was although I'm not sure we should give it up yet.

they want to replace it with a cheaper alternative, not give it up...

Yeah I know that's what they say but I do have the feeling that they would quite like to drop any other launch mechanism if they got into power as Clegg continually claims to want to lead on nuclear disarmarment. If a cheaper alternative could be found I'd be very happy.

with what though?  define it... he wont.

they want a review, the BBC suggested about 4 ideas on TV in the last 2 days, generals have also said we should look at alternatives to trident, again, im not supporting Clegg, im pointing out what there policy really is, as its one that I think makes sense.

I will never, ever vote for Labour or the Conservatives.

they can fund those things through taxation and national insurance, we can also re-direct funds from things like Trident being scrapped and from pulling out of Afghanistan.

Woah a hardnut here ;)

Yeah i would like trident to be scrapped for something cheaper, not sure about afghanistan havent really read enough about it.

Also it would really be a BIG tax hike- 1.95 million uk uni students in 07 according to BBC-http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/7859034.stm

Therefore £3290x1.95million=£6,580,000,000 PER YEAR!

its a price worth paying imo.

I think they should keep it similiar or lower it, but not get rid of it, all the unis are saying they want an increase to 6 grand, so keeping it the same for now is better than that.

well, they should have a review of it then and decide how much we need to raise from taxes and other areas to fund Uni's in future, forcing young people in to debt is not fair or the solution imo.

I still think that uni's will have teaching quality reduced etc

I think Clegg is saying the best things so far, Cameron is just pandering and Gordon is barmy.

pandering?  interesting word

you mean is saying the thing that he thinks the masses want to hear?

exactly, he always does that, says what he thinks (I dont think it will much of the time, or he would do much better in opinion polls) will win him votes rather than being honest and spelling out policy commitments. (they all need to do the last one more)

so if he is pandering to the masses then he thinks and you think that the masses dont want full european integration...

Unfortunately public opinion is not always the best course of action that a country should take. I would rather have a leader who fought for what was right and not what was popular.

he still has to get that mandate from the people... otherwsaie he gets kicked out or has to become a dictatorship

I despise the politics of "I know best", thats the real elitism in the Uk right now.  The liberal elite saying we know best... makes me ill.

The problem is that some people do know what is 'best' much more than other people. That may sound 'elitist' but you can't deny it's true. Of course a government should represent the people but it should also fight for what is best for the people and unfortunately the two do not always go together.
