I think that athleticism is part of the criteria of a sport... |
if chess can somehow be considered a sport, starcraft and various other video game leagues can be considered sports too.

Never denied that fact. But yeah, it is a sad truth I guess? IDK, definitions and names are inevitably human creations. Just attach and take away as many properties you want from a sound or symbol.

i love sports, of all kind, it seems to me the only thing starcraft is missing sportwise is athleticism, otherwise, it is the most fair and balanced sport in the world, is fantastic to watch, fast paced, u dont have to wait at half time and cna be played by everyone, and its hugely popular, sure mainly in korea, but in australia we have australian rules football and most people have never heard of it, but its a huge sport here, so its not about being popular a sit allready is, for what it lacks in athleticism is makes up for in EVERY other area with more to spare. a problem with chess and too a lesser extent bowling is that there pretty boring to watch, commentary is limited, its just NOT a good spectator sport

Also, about Nascar being a sport...
I'm not a fan of Nascar, but the average person would pass out driving at the speeds those guys drive at for a 1/4th of as fast as they drive. It takes a lot of endurance to be a Nascar driver.
Otherwise they'd be all short little guys like horse jockeys.

That and 4 hours of driving in hot cars with flame retardant suits on and the only comfort you have is helmets that blow cool air in (doesn't mean it gets in the rest of your suit).
Then you factor in building a car and when to pit/not to pit is a lot of planning and strategy.
There's a reason why some rich guy isn't just buying himself a car and driving it in the middle of those crazy drivers.

All true. The strategy of Nascar is actually pretty interesting stuff. Team individual sports in general are interesting like that.

Chess is a sport. It can tire you mentally and physically if you are not prepared, and you need pure skill to be a champion.
