Forums - Gaming - Sony saves Nintendo in court!

Ok. So the title tells that Sony stood up in court to defend Nintendo, but the story tells about existing apparatus that predates the patent and invalidates it.

I don't know the whole case but i'm glad nintendo won. I don't support the idea of stealing ideas but if you're going to come up with something, then just wait till another company uses it (not knowing it was already invented) and sells millions from it then sue them it seems wrong to me.

Nintendo PlayStation confirmed?!

On a serious note, at least one gaming company was able (even if it wasn't the original intent) to help another one out from these folks who just love their $.

Nintendo Playstation was confirmed way back XD

..So Nintendo walked away without paying a dollar? while MS still paid yet could've got off the hook as well?

I'm pretty happy what actually happened, did. The industry has benefited from it.

Besides, that console is fugly

They must hate how much this came to bite them in the ass lol.  Not so much now, but they must have been like DAMNIT for the ten years prior to this gen, even if they were still profitable.  No faith in optical storage ftw.  I think we're better off the way things happened as well.

@CGI: The comment related to what was said earlier about the title meeting the content.

Anyway, there's one sort of causality in question: if Sony hadn't made Dualshock controller back in 1998, had
1. The controllers that were accused of infridgiments existed?
2. The patent in question existed in the first place?

Number one is very likely, but number 2 is doubtful.

Thread doesn't live up to its title.

Have you read the OP and post following?

Yes, and it didn't live up to my initial expectation of a Nintendo-Sony alliance against patent trolls, which is what I inferred from the title and first glance.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

I think Nintendo was ultimately glad how it came out. If they hadn't ditched it, the original deal would have lead to a severe rights war between Nintendo and Sony in the long run, and probably delayed the launch of the 5th generation considerably (given that this was an SNES component after all). Nintendo is still the master of their own property, which i think they would value more than a vastly successful console that they struggle for control over.

good post

Sorry about my post, I didn't know this was already posted.

Well, I can't believe what I just just read. I'm...amazed. I'm wordless...

I think the DS controller saving Ninty $21 million is worth more than a steak dinner. That Twilight Princess cover looks pretty good to me.

But how much did all the lawyer's bills add up to? And why did it take multiple court battles to get to this point? All the principles on which the final (correct) decision was made are well established. Obviously the original case was based on linking 700 to 525 and it should have been pretty easy to show that 700 and 525 were not linked. EVERYONE knew the DS controller was out in the late 90's.

Ninty would have been better off hiring some fanboys to represent them in court, not a bunch of money grubbing lawyers. They would have won the original court case.
