Forums - Microsoft - 2k announces XCom for 360 and PC

OMG, this is one of my top 5 series of all times! Well this is going to be an interesting couple of years with Mech Warrior 5, Xcom (even if it isn't the original theme), Fable 3 (made by the guy who made Syndicate which is another one of my fave of all time games) and Civilization 5!!!!. Thats 4 out of 5 of my top games ever having sequels!!! All I need is an Age of Empires sequel to be complete.

Why in the world are you excited for an FPS X-Com?  Especially one where you play as an FBI agent?  It seems like the game is going to be more narrative focused rather than giving you control of basically everything like the original games.  I'm curious because I'm also a big X-Com fan, and I can't help but think that this game is going to be anything but X-Com.  X-Com: Intercepter wasn't X-Com.  X-Com: Enforcer wasn't X-Com.  I have no reason to believe that this new XCOM game will be X-Com.

I mean, the ONLY thing that made X-Com stand out was it's unique combination of strategic gameplay (building bases, managing resources) and squad based tactical gameplay.  It's not like it had a particularly unique setting (present day earth...) or a particularly unique story (aliens are invading....from Mars...and then from underwater....).  It didn't even have a single "character" in the game.  It was just you as the commander and a bunch of randomly generated and recruited soldiers.

Truthfully, would you be excited about a new Age of Empires game that turned out to be a hack and slash game?

It's going to be Bioshock 2 with an "X-com" skin.

Sort of like how Fallout 3 was Oblivion with a "fallout" skin.

Not actual reboots. Just using the name and content to generate sales.

Xcom is popular?

IGN listed it as the greatest PC game of all time in 2007, and again in 2009.

isn't it common for Nintendo fans to dimiss IGN's review? ;)

Played xcom, didn't like it that much. FPS game based on xcom just isn't that exciting.

Sorry I forgot.  IGN sucks.  But they also listed it as the greatest PC game of all time back in 2000, before they were so anti-Nintendo, so I can agree with their 2000 list instead.

Because success with an FPS game increases the likelihood of further games in the series which also follow the main theme. Since I love the concept of Xcom I love anything potentially related to the original Xcom because even a bastardisation is better than nothing. I give it a lot more credence because its likely a fairly big budget release which will be given a lot more care and attention from the developers than something which is just a name-sake as far as I can tell. Since its one of my favourite series I will give the announcement the benefit of the doubt rather than be cynical about the implications. I also love Star Trek and that series has had any number of different themes and spinoffs which differ from the main theme of the series so im used to the concept of a new series not wholly following the original to the letter.

Nooooooooo, turning a great franchise into shit. Just make it back into it's isometric 3d Turnbase or RTS if you like tactical strategy shooter. Please for the sake of all things just make a good new X-Com game rather than raping the franchise name into a horrible mess. Like Star Wars and Shadowrun. Great starts, brilliant first movies and games, but then it's get's shittified by the prequels or turned into a POS Shooter.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

That is pretty substantial, I guess.
