I believe that Ubisoft has killed Splinter Cell, and that we have lost something beautiful, that will never be regained.

Upset the latest Splinter Cell is not on the PS3?

Are you accusing me of being a fanboy?

Let's see:
* You don't have an XBox 360.

* You declare a franchise whose latest game is only on the XBox 360 to be "dead".  The title is also said to be a major exclusive for the XBox 360.

* You create a post in a forum, on a website, which abounds with fanboys who look for any opportunity to take a shot and take down a console they don't own.

So, put all these together, along with your post, and what do you think?  Why wouldn't I think that you happen to be an upset fanboy who is doing sour grapes trolling?  Not saying that it is, but why wouldn't I think this is the pattern?

The game is also available on PC.

NOT on the PS3 and posted in the Microsoft forum.  And the poster in question, while own a PC, apparently had decided to get more recent game titles not on the PC, but on the PS3 (Bad Company 2 and Oblivion on PS3, and not PC).  I can edit my original post to say an major release NOT on the PS3, instead of calling it an "exclusive" for accuracy.

Maybe he's just an old jaded gamer like me who is sick of all the classic franchises being morphed into different games.

I own a PC, but the only PC games I have are Deus Ex, Invisible War, Rome: Total War, and Medieval II: Total War (which barely runs on the lowest settings). Hardly capable of playing Splinter Cell, Crysis, or Bad Company 2.

And I chose to post this in the Microsoft forum, because as of now, Splinter Cell: Conviction, my main topic, is considered widely to be an 360 exclusive, and not doing so will raise even more complaints than the one I'm getting from you.

I must say the feeling is definitely mutual. Conviction is one of those games I had reserved, being a fan of the series, that I will not be picking up. I will eventually pick it up but not at full price and most likely second-hand. Why? For the exact same reasons. Chaos Theory is also my favorite in the series and after that I have not seen that kind of SC game again. The series has started to become an action series and that's not what SC is. It's nothing like that. Double Agent was the first move and now Conviction is the same direction. Game might be amazing in its own right, but to me it isn't Splinter Cell anymore.

And I've been seeing this a lot with franchises. As I'm always harking back to, RE4 changed things. Cinematic action games started to pop out (despite that game not even being one). And it's really started to change and to me sometimes corrupt older franchises. Case in point with me was RE5. RE4 was a huge change from the original games, and I was okay with that because for the first time I felt like there was a really good and well-working RE game that stayed close enough to its roots to still feel nostalgic. However when RE5 came out it was a push too far. Instead I got a cinematic action game that seemed so distant to the originals that they could have used a new name and I would have never known it was RE.

And it has happened to other franchises as well, but it just seems everyone has to have this action-oriented gameplay to it with cinematic cutscenes. And for some games and genres that is great, but for others it isn't. They can be used, but not a centerpiece. And really they probably only do it as a marketing thing. Ever since call of duty 4, everyone is asking for these big cinematic like games and its forcing them to change old formulas to fit them. Usually it turns out to just be shock value rather than actual progress.

I have no issue with the new way of making games. I think many people like how it worked in such was as Call of Duty Modern Warfare or Uncharted 2. But not every game needs to be made like that. Some genres need evolutions in their gameplay, or even revolutions. But they need it in different ways with different attributes. Nor should we just kill off the old way of gaming. Adaptation not genocide. Guess everyone is always focusing on Wii killing gaming, but I think this whole "movie-like" experience phenomenon is one that has a better shot of killing some great old-school ways of playing.

My problem with this game is that it no longer appears to be a stealth game at all but more of an action game. Don't get me wrong, those types of games are fine but Splinter Cell should not be one. The Splinter Cell series was alway about hiding in shadows and not about going up to someone and just kicking their ass. At least that's what I think.

After beating the game I can honestly say that Convictions is a big disappointment. Not only is it the shortest single player game I have ever played ( 4 hour and about 20 to 30 minutes), but its one of the easiest ( I posted my thoughts in another thread). Little to no stealth at all, with mark and execution taking the difficulty and strategy right out of it ( Take someone down, mark three men and repeat this process over and over until you beat the game).

I am enjoying it. Been doing some pretty awesome things to bad guys.

That's great to hear that Conviction is a great game, in its own right. However, please stop derailing my thread and answer if the game has failthfully preserved enough of the original series's gameplay and philosophy.

It has... you only have to have the will to want it to be and it is so... there are some elements missing that are sad, but seriouslly this is a stealth game at it's heart and it holds true to the series... in fact it's far more tactical then ever before... I think that they did well... this is an unleashed Sam Fisher

Whats bullshit? This in order is what you do throughout the game. Take someone down, mark three men and execute, more men come throw a frag, kill three grab one as he runs completely past your character in cover mark and execute the rest, then interrogate someone press B three times, and repeat. The time stealth is the only option ( If you don't its a mission fail) is when you sneak into the Agency and thats short lived ( you blow up generators ) and your back to take a guy down, mark and execution, then interrogate. No bullshit.
