Forums - Sony - Kojima responds to complaints about cross promotion in Peace Walker

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker box art.

Early this week, Konami announced that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be packed with many cross promotional tie-ins, from Monster Hunter to Doritos to AXE. Some fans did not appreciate the announcements, however.

Hideo Kojima recently responded to these complaints on his Twitter. The creator of the Metal Gear Solid series stated that the cross promotional tie-ins were done to “surprise” the players. He promised that the in-game marketing will cease once it losses it’s “freshness.” Hideo Kojima also stated that this method of promotion is different than the ones you usually see in Hollywood movies.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be released for the PSP in North America on June 8th. You can view some screens of the cross promotional tie-ins in the game from the slideshow below:

Selling out is the freshest surprise ever. Kudos to Kojima.

Snarkyness is kinda your thing around here huh?

Kojima has done some great things in video games that I really appreciate.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt until it starts hurting game quality.  For instance, I heard the Monster Hunter cameo is some kind of bonus content and is not part of the games actual story.

I, for one, don't really care about the in-game marketing. As long as it's not going to constantly display banners across my screen, then I could really care less. There's an iPod in MGS4, but it's hardly advertising, it's just an in-game item.

If there's a cutscene in MGS: Peace Walker where Snake takes a break to listen to his Walkman, eat some Doritos and slap on some Axe deodorant, then I'll be annoyed. But just labeling a ration item as Doritos and having an in-game Walkman as an item to use is A-OK with me.

Most of the tie in appears to cameo, I don't really mind.

He's putting monster hunter bosses in, if he wants to spray me with axe everytime before I play I would be cool with it.

Time for hype

Nobody ever complained about the Playboy being in the MGS Games

Product placement can enhance a game if done right (mostly in ironic ways), but if he wanted to surprise someone he should not have announced it!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
