Forums - Microsoft - Whay doesn't Microsoft buy more companies?

i don't see why Microsoft gave up bungie just because they wanted to be independent MS should buy insomniac since they are an independent company

If they didn't let Bungie go the staff would just leave the studio and create a new one. What would M$ achieve by that.

It's investing a lot in new studios. People just like to ignore it =/

like what? I know they own turn 10, remedy games, and the gyuys who made crackdown. Who else?

Microsoft's first party is

343 Studios - Will take over Halo from Bungie after Reach
BigPark - New studio, first game will be XBLA game Joy Ride
Firebird Studios - No games announced yet
Spawnpoint Studios - Working on Natal game
Lionhead - Fable
Rare - A whole lot of stuff
Turn 10 - Forza
Xbox Live Productions - Two random arcade games
Wingnut - Not expecting anything from these guys

So they have 3 current studios, 4 who are essentially brand new and one who seems to be pointless and probably doesn't exist anymore

Out of all these studios only Lionhead and Turn 10 have made games that were worth remebering (even though im not a fan of fable). I guess what i mean is that why doesn't microsoft invest in much larger projects like what SOny did with Uncharted, Littlebigplanet, Killzone 2, etc.

they do invest money just differently and in a bad way for the actual gamer. what microsoft seen to do is they spend crap loads of money advertising the game where as sony spend crap loads actualy makeing the games better. kinda like gran turismo 5. sony hav delayed it over and over again because they keep ajusting it putting more money to make it better. where as microsoft with forza 3 didnt realy both with any of that. they just made the game and released it. im not saying forza 3 was bad just that it could hav been alot better if they just deleayed for a couple of months and workds on the flaws of the game.

lol microsoft got no hope in hell of buying insomniac. sony own all there surrent games series and there all selling well. dout they want to just give them all up.

they have no money left after paying for all those timed exclusives...

You guys are all wrong apparently.

According to Playstation France... it costs too simply too much :

http://www.gameblog.fr/news_12741_lci-gameclub-19-itv-georges-fornay-pdg-playstation-france

This is especially true with this gen, where mutiplat is king.

Evan Wells (Uncharted 2): I think the differences that you see between any two games has much more to do with the developer than whether it’s on the Xbox or PS3.

Two big reasons....

First, Microsoft has to pay attention to anti-trust law issues much more closely then other companies because of the Windows monopoly. If MS was to buy up a bunch of gaming studios this could be construed as building another monopoly in gaming and supporting a greater monopoly with Windows.

Second, North American companies have a culturally different business model to run under then Japanese companies. In North America when you hire employees it is much more difficult to fire them, and many North Americans are more concerned about social aspects of their lives then careers. Therefore, it is better to "contract" studios then to own them because if they start to perform badly, then you can just not give them the next game contract.

You do realize that companies need to make profit right? Only games with amazing legs don't have to worry about dev. time guess on which console those games useally appear a hint: its not xbox or ps3.

GT5 will no doubt destroy Forza but that doesn't mean the game will be flawless.

It's cheaper this way. If you read Takahashis books, you'd know they could have had Square for $4 billion, but now we know what we know that would have been a tragic waste. Obviously they're expanding what with all the new endevours that are to come (Xbox 3, Natal etc) and when it's right they'll spash out.

Microsofts got where it has this gen on the basis of doing it their way and it's worked. Let them be.
