Forums - Sony - Sony having multi core chip for next gen

I know next gen is far away but im a little confised. I read an article a couple of months ago saying that Sony might develop a multi core chip for the next gen. What does this mean? Are they ditching the cell processor? Or will they have multiple cell processors? What happend to that larabee plan with intel?

Multi-core = more than one core.

*Assuming this info is right*

So either you say the SPEs aren't cores and the next generation console has more PPE style cores or you say that the SPEs are cores and its just confirming what you already know.

Tease.

i got this from this article.

Well considering that both the 360 is multicore in the traditional sense and the ps3 has multiple cores in a slightly less traditional sense I think its pretty much a done deal that the ps4 will have some kind of multicore cpu. Everything is done with multiple cores this day anyway.

Its hard to say what is going to happen, everybody has an opinion, we will not know for a while, I have heard they are going with a processor that has 3 cell processors on it, sounds absolutly nuts but we will see, what ever it is I know Sony , and it will be amazing, and it will be the cutting edge, and will be for many years to come.

i think 3 cells with 2 gb ram and a bad ass gpu would be nice.

Update: The original source says that the original predecessor of the Cell (the 32 SPE one) has been discontinued and will appear in a different form.

“The Cell design is not dead, but parts of it will reappear in another form”

Tease.

If you read the update it just says they're dropping that model of cell and specifcally 'the design will appear in a different form'. So by the sounds of it they have the intention of using cell technology for future processors.

Cool. That would be a powerful system if there is more than 1 Cell Processor.
