Forums - Gaming - Wow ruined console gaming for me

I was wondering if anyone else felt this way. Ever since I started playing PC games back in Diablo/WC3 days console gaming took a step back in my eyes but I still played new games that came out for it until I beat them then went back to Diablo2. Since WoW came out my Ps2 gathered dust until release of God of War 2 and FFXII but I didn't even finish those 2 games before playing WoW again!

I used to play WoW every day 4-5 hours a day sometimes more then had to quit because of work/college and a social life. I understand how people are addicted to WoW because I get like cravings to play it again lol, I know I can't though because I would get sucked back into raiding/arenas and never stop.

Ever since I quit wow though it seems like most console games are lackluster to me, they don't captivate me the same anymore and the worst part is most of them end. I'm not a fan of FPS so their online play doesnt entice me but games like God of war 3 after I beat them I don't want to replay them and thats it. It just seems like WoW ruined console gaming for me.

I also find myself waiting for a good console mmo or dungeon crawler type game that will make me feel like I'm playing WoW again. Oblivion sucked to me. single player mmo bleh and most other games don't fit the bill. I guess I'm gona try FF14 or dcuniverse when it comes out.

I got a new PC for gaming, WoW was one of the first games I got for it and I thought it was so horrible I got to L26 and it still wasnt fun (they said it would get better but why waste another 20 hours to find out?). I got a few other PC games that would never get a console release such as Civ4 and The Guild 2 but after that I got a 360 and I have never looked back. I think it is fair to say that if WoW had appealed to me then I may have sticked to PC gaming so I can honestly say: ''wow ruimed PC gaming for me.''

Man PC gaming is so much better than console gaming at least IMO.

Battlefield 2 Project Reality/Forgotten hope mods > All console gaming.

Thats why i love BF BC2, The hardcore 2 reminds me alot of that.

Yep WoW did the same for me for a long time.

Started in the Beta played till Lich King 3.2

In this time i nearly didn't play anything except the Big AAA Games...And then normally only once

I have to say - I were in a World Top100 Raidguild and we had to raid 5-6 times a week for a long time.
In the time I didn't raid i made PvP(Classic WoW) - In BC i started to get more time for other things because i hated Arena.

On AQ40 and Naxx Classic times we had to raid in the week 5-6 hours(6-7pm till midnight+1 hour sometimes and on the weekend from Midday till open End)

With BC also here we started to get more freetime and we didn't need to farm for Gold/Stuff/Buffcrap and such stuff....You had in a short amount of time more money than you every could spend.
Karazhan/Gruul/Mag were on farm in a short time...SSC/TK took a little bit but didn't take that much time also...HM/BT same...It started with Sunwell again....Hardcoreraiding because we wanted to clear this perfect Raiddungeon before the Casualnerf - We started again with our old raidtimes.

Wrath of the Casual LichKing was the end from everything....
You absolutely didn't need to farm anything....We rushed trough the Content with   2-3(for Ulduar Hardmodes 3) Raiddays and yeah...This Arena stuff with Anub was the last thing i have seen - This crap was clear in I dont know how many minutes after our realms worked.

ICC what i have seen is absolutely the same easy crap again - Except Arthas10/25 Hardmode

You say do it with alts? Why should I?
I want damn bosses where i have to try it 500 times and hope for the lucky try to pass them.I want to play at the maximum with 100% and not rushing trough a complete Addon for > ONE < Boss in a Hardmode to get that what i want

Not interested in this crap anymore.Im happy that i have so much time to play now the console stuff that i missed and is coming out.
I mean, thanks to Activision that they told Blizzard to ruin the game or otherwise i probably wouldn't have played Uncharted 2 and such stuff Oo

I HOPE  Final Fantasy 14 goes in a way i can live with or otherwise MMORPG's are dead for me.
I dont have anything against casuals and idiots but if they have to play this game too they should get what they deserve....Crap Items and nothing else like it was in World of Warcraft Classic =)

Only negative thing on this is > Console games are so expensive.
I had so much money when i played WoW because i didn't pay for other stuff :<

Cows run!!

Hrm, WoW is in its own genre. I can't say it affected my console games at all.

But, ah, too much WoW hate going around here! If you're wondering what the appeal of the game is, I'll say this much: it isn't the story. It's developing your character with friends, and interacting with others in the world. Grinding levels on your own is obviously going to be boring (if that's what anyone was doing). PvP in particular is my fav.

I don't know anyone who plays the game for the story. I don't see that as a problem, as games don't require stories anyway. We're not playing Final Fantasy, here!

As I said above, that's my gripe not only with WoW, but with MMOs in general. I dislike MMOs as they're not what i'm looking for in a RPG. I've never been much of a fan for online gaming, so PvP and other things don't interest me, which takes a lot of the appeal away from WoW, to me.

Plus, I love the Warcraft story from the RTS, as it's one of the richest lores ever created. So I was kind of let down on seeing how they continued that story on WoW. Hopefully they get around to do a Warcraft 4, but I just don't see that happen anytime soon.

As for games not requiring stories, I beg to differ and a lot of people will beg to differ too. Some games depend heavily on the story, and no, not just Final Fantasy (and there are lots of games with stories better than any Final Fantasy).

Oh, I only brought FF up because it's a popular example of a game that does depend on story (and I've been playing it!).

When I say games do not require stories, I mean just that. Not all games need a story to be good - in fact, the most successful games of all time have little to none (Sim games, Wii Series, Mario, Tetris, etc).

I don't mean to say that all games should have no story. Obviously, I enjoy plenty of these as well. I just got my bro addicted to Ace Attorney (making me replay them all over again...).

@SubSenix

The "casual" hater, eh? I don't think any major game should appeal to you, because the game you want is too extreme for most gamers. The vast majority prefer the changes Blizzard made, directed at the "casuals." I'm one of them, actually - not that I'm terrible at the game (not even close), but I simply don't have as much time or desire to play as much as others do.

Thankfully, nowadays it takes little to fully gear up a character, so I don't really have to worry about falling behind.

WoW sucks you in because you start to feel like you have an obligation to the other players you meet and the friends you make. The social aspect of games like WoW is way beyond what you find in most console games, many of which don't even encourage you to play with the same people more than once (random matchmaking).

Quitting WoW doesn't just mean not playing the game any more, it means dropping every friendship you've made inside the game, often forever, because if you ever want to go back you'll be much lower level than your old friends. So you not only lose the experience of playing the game, you lose what for many people is their main social activity, their most active set of relationships, and their favorite topic of conversation with friends. (In-game friends, but friends all the same.)

It also means giving up on your ambition to reach the highest level, or (assuming you're at the cap) your ambition of having the best gear or stats of anyone on your server, or anyone in your guild. These things have a strange power when you're in a virtual world with thousands of other people.

I think the draw of WoW goes way beyond the gameplay itself, which is what most games attempt to draw you in with.

Halo ruined console gaming for me. After that genres started being shoehorned into a control scheme which obviously sucks for said genres. There are still some games which are hella fun, but not many.

You ruined PC gaming for me.  Every time I see one of your posts I get this incredible urge to utterly trash my computer and burn all my PC games.

I just read all of vlads post in my head (or sometimes out loud) in the Comic Book Guy's voice from the Simpson's, then I get a giggle and move on. This works for shio too.

OT: If you played a game for 4-5 hours, every day, there is way more wrong with you than having console gaming "ruined" by the "awesomeness" of WoW. Also, this seems like another very valid reason to NEVER play this game.

I feel the exact same way.

Some console titles aren't very impressive especially after a game as fun as WoW.
It's hard to find game play equal to WoW.

WoW let's people have fun... it was hard to adjust to no jumping in a lot of console games.

After returning to WoW for a few weeks, I realized I had more fun in WoW and completely stopped turning on my PS3 or even caring about upcoming consoles games.

I stopped playing WoW... hopefully now I can finish Final Fantasy and start Resonance of Fate...

WOW? I thought it ruined MMO's and made people play browser games?
