Forums - Sony - PS3 Arcade with provided USB flash drives?

The feature Microsoft is about to add to the Xbox 360 got me thinking... can Sony release a PS3 Arcade with no hard drive but lets say 2 16GB USB flash drives? Wouldn't something like that make them a huge profit? and it will make the PS3 way more reliable since there is a lot of heat coming out of the hard drive

Nope!

The PS3 relies on the HDD for streaming data to/from as well as installs. Any USB drive which was good enough would only be marginally cheaper than a HDD.

Tease.

The HDD-less PS3 would have to come with the USBs, so Sony would just be exchanging one cost (HDD) for another (USBs). Per GB, HDDs are far cheaper, so Sony would probably end up paying just the same amount, but giving their customers less storage in the process.
As Squilliam said, any USB good enough wouldn't save Sony much/anything, and would come at the cost of vastly lower storage.

NO JUST NO DONT STOOP TO MICROSOFts level sony PLEASE for the LOVE OF GOD DO NOT do this D: THIS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA

that's bad business practice. please don't give sony the idea of sacrificing quality over profit, unlike some companies which i won't mention. =P

For that to work, Sony would have to include a 16 GB flash drive storage just so as to make the system viable. Many features/games on the PS3 have been designed to take advantage of the compulsory HDD...

the cost of a two 16gb flash drive would probably be a small drop in cost but a huge drop in quality.

I am a Gamer... I play games and not consoles. I have a PC and Console on which I game... I like games. End of Story!

HDD's are dirt cheap, Sony wouldn't save any money by swapping them with usb flash drives.

HDD are cheaper than USB FLS drives, so theres no point.

i would like to see a 40gig back in shops though, 40gig -wifi -internal psu

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

u can already use the ps3 with USB flash drives for game saves from the very beginning.

It wouldn't make any sense to use 40 gig HDD when make 40 gig HDD actually costs the same or even MORE to make than 120 gig HDD. Why would they move to smaller HDD's although they would only lose money while doing so and customers would lose HDD space? They moved to bigger HDD's because they are cheaper or same price now than smaller ones.
