I don't think that's true. I think only the first one was a commercial success. I could be wrong though.

that does'nt matter. It all depends on the profit. Some movies can do just okay and make a bunch of money,if it cost nothing to make it.

Gross Earning: $102M

RE: Apocalypse

Budget: $45

Gross Earning: $129M

RE: Extinction

Budget: $45

Gross Earning: $147M

These numbers are box office only and do not include DVD/Blu-ray sales either,  which I am sure were also pretty decent numbers as well.
