Forums - Sony - PS3 3D will be 'limited', say Heavenly Sword dev

Tech won't have enough power until next generation of consoles, reckons Ninja Theory

Ninja Theory co-founder Tameem Antoniades has told CVG the current generation of consoles will be limited in their ability to produce stereoscopic 3D effects.

"The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," said Antoniades during a recent interview with CVG.

"So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec," he explained, and that makes sense if you consider very few games run at 60fps, and even fewer at true 1080p due to processing restrictions.

"I think the technology's limited now, so you won't be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar - the movie - in 3D," he added, speaking of the planned 3D update for PS3 coming this summer.

"Every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we'll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games."

Right now though, you'll have to make do with the much simpler 3D offerings of Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition, which does 3D on any TV. Read our impressions of that here.

we will have to wait and see, maybe they're doing something different from what he is talking about.

edit: and since they already demo'd GT5 , SuperStardust HD and Wipeout (all of them run at 60 FPS) then i think they'll do fine.

I live for the burn...and the sting of pleasure...
I live for the sword, the steel, and the gun...

- Wasteland - The Mission.

That's interesting. Althought GT5 has been shown in 3D i think at GDC running in its full glory

Nintendo says : "hum hum"

As for 3D tech, well, at least you should be able to play some Move games with that...

It will be limited, I agree, but I think this is more of a warmup for the next generation anyway, and will be cool none the less.

Around the Network

if its limited then what did they show at the conference, you know the one with motorstorm, GT5, stardust HD and Wipeout hd in 3d??

Limited is a relative word. Limited in comparison to what? Just because something is not at its full potential doesn't mean it's bad.

It will be just fine I think (and hope).

May the adjustments be with you

I feel a disturbance in the sales

Hmm altrough 120 Hz is desirable as it will be halved into 60 you can get away with making 60 Hz into 3d as it gives 30 fps game.

Of course the problem is that most games barely make 30 fps @ 720p on PS3

Once again I'm going to throw this on the table.
