Gravity got hit with the nerf bat cause it was overpowered.

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

it would be awesome to see that inside of that thing.

Yay! Someone took interest.

I know, I think I would give almost anything to visit. Last year my girlfriend lived with a physics student who got to visit it. I was extremely jealous.

I'm hoping said student was a girl.  Otherwise your jealous for the wrong reason.

Also, bah.  We all know this is just a plot to bring back the banished egyptian gods that will make us play childrens card games with death being the penalty for losing.

Good.  I mean I'm a big fan of science too but I was getting worried for you.

What between that and Premier League hijinks.

i have a question, what is the purpose of the hadron collider? i heard it was to discover the origin of the universe, right?

Several experiments are going on (four I believe) but the biggest purpose is probably finding the Higgs Boson which gives mass to particles. Finding it would help confirm that our current model of the universe is correct accurate.

Fixed.  It may sound like semantics, but until we understand why things happen and not just how they happen I don't think it'd be proper to call the model correct.

@topic: It's an exciting day for science.  As a physics student I still get excited over successful shuttle launches, probe landings, etc... and this is the biggest event fo several years, likely not to be surpassed until either ITER goes online, or NASA is actuallly allowed to develop a new launch system to completion, whichever occurs first...

As Rath has already said, their primary goal is to try and find out whether the Higgs Boson exists (Kind of like a particle that gives some other particles mass). But they also want to find out a few other things such as does dark matter exist? If so what is it? Are electromagnetism, strong nuclear and weak nuclear different manifestations of the same force? Why is gravity the weakest force? What was the nature of the early Universe? Are there extra dimensions? And so on.

interesting.
