It's Sony's April Fools to get people to buy a second PS3.

joking aside, I too think it's an April fool. too many things about it just doesn't add up.

the fact is no one would be happy if any feature would be removed, but yes, sony does have every right to remove whatever feature they like and screw us over. just like if a store announces a sale, they reserve the right to reneg on that special w/out any notice and refuse you the discounted price.
sony was stupid for adding a feature that attracts hackers like shit attracts flies (for not many more sales) but they definitely don't have to pay for the mistake. its a pill they, nor the devs have to swallow. geohot, the douche backed sony into a corner, its only normal they hadda come back biting, and unfortunately were the ones who got bit.
unless of course it is an april fools joke, in which case...AHHAHAHAHAHA sony, you're so nice, you added an extra feature on the ps3
I have a second console....but I don't know how to put Ubuntu on it :( can someone help me before its too late?

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.
Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Don't worry, the majority of this forum will find a way to spin it as a huge benefit and some a huge improvement over the other consoles.
OT:
I have wanted to use it to do heavy caulculationw ork but I was too lazy to do so. I do know for a fact that some professors in college are using it as such though.
I've been using my Ps3 for 2 years now as a personal computer, come the first I'll be computerless :(
It's sad that they're doing this, especially so suddenly, it would have been much smarter if they had given more than a few days for people who do in fact use it as their personal computer and could replace it as such.
Just waiting for that PS Vita to come out so I can play some full featured games on the go with that beautiful screen and control scheme...
We have a cluster here we use for HPC and compiler research. While those machines won't be affected because they are setup to only boot into Linux, I bought one for myself to run code dangerous code on (some mmap tweaks live in kernel space) and watch movies/play games. My roommate is currently writing a Sudoku solver on it for a paper (Sudoku is NP hard I'm told).
Some of the Sony fans are getting really annoying. Just because YOU don't use it or don't know why anyone would want to use it, doesn't mean that no one does. The whole point of adding linux support was to let developers get familiar with the architecture without a huge investment.

Yes, but you most also understand, Alephnull, that most of the people who have the need for linux support in an actual productive setting, will be doing that nearly exclusively with their Playstation 3's, and won't have a need to get game updates...or for the PSN...or anything like that, just the otherOS functionality...You don't HAVE to update if you're using them for research purposes

Right, and as I said the machines in the cluster will be unaffected (assuming no jackass decides to try to play a game on one of them in the middle of the night not knowing he might accidentally destroy the machine). The thing is, I bought mine for when I don't want to work on the cluster (I hate Fedora) AND to play games when I don't feel like working. Now if I want to play any new games which come out -- without nuking my gentoo partition -- I need to A) buy another PS3 or B) carefully wait for Geohot's cracked Firmware updates.
