Forums - Sony - Sony's Blatant Lie (About Other OS)

What makes you think that when PS3 is hacked that Linux will be needed to use the hack? Linux is just used to open the door. Obviously removing it now won't stop the hackers, because they simply won't update. On the contrary, they will work harder, because they now have a legitimate reason to hack PS3.
So all this does is punish regular users who bought the launch model for a lot of money.

So the hackers publish how they can hack the PS3 using another OS, and then Sony takes away the ability to use the other OS, and that then gives Hackers "legitimate reason" to hack the PS3?

That logic seems strangely circular.  Wouldn't the fault then land on the hackers who started hacking it without "legitimate reason"?

Maybe because linux IS needed to use the hack?

Just a thought

If you need Linux to open doors then you will need Linux to hack it. You don't make a system play pirated games just by snapping your fingers.

For the Wii and the 360 you have to do quite a lot of difficult manipulations to be able to hack it.

So far, many high profile hackers (who aren't interested in piracy at all) didn't invest a lot of effort into PS3, because they could already run their code on PS3- via Linux. There wasn't much incentive to crack the system. Now there is.

No cricular logic.

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

"The region locking of the 3DS wasn't done for profits on games"-MDMAlliance

Lie Definition

1. A false statement deliberately presented as being true; a falsehood.

2. Something meant to deceive or give a wrong impression.

I don't think they did either. They obviously wanted to keep the "other OS" on the original PS3's because they would have just removed it at the time of the Slim launch. Their hand was forced, the PS3 is the most secure console this generation and the PSP is the most hacked.

There is no way they will let the PS3 become like the PSP hence the removal of Linux support, is it pre-mature? Of course but they want to nip this in the bud asap.

The funny part is that this action may actually make hackers more interested in hacking the PS3.

Before, all hackers could play around with Cell development and make PS3 apps with Sony's approval, now anyone who wants to do that has to strongly hack the PS3. The kind of strong hack that could perhaps be used for doing anything with the PS3, including playing pirated games.

Oh man you are a real hoot. LOL. It would make them more interested? I doubt it. If they weren't interested in before I doubt this would make people get a sudden urge to hack it. Serriously dude you need to take a breather. You don't even own a Ps3 so this doesn't even effect you. And if it was such an important feature to you why didn't you buy a ps3 for the 3 and a half years its been on the market.

No matter how to twist it, the fact remains that Sony advertised Linux installable on PS3.
There are people that buy PS3s as cheap alternative for number crunching.

Regardless of how small the number of people that uses Linux, it still is a betrayal to their customers.

I am sure we'll see some class action lawsuit on this if it turns out to be... not April Fool's.

They advertised it? I'd like to see where they did that. And LOL at the class action law suit... yeah... we MIGHT see one (doubt it) but that doesn't mean it will go anywhere (Like you were suggesting) it'd be thrown out of court before the judge takes a seat.

I'm sure PS3 sales will plummet after this announcement.
I just can't see why anyone would want to own a PS3 if it doesn't have Linux support. I mean it's not like the PS3 has Blu-ray, awesome games, and an online network to mess with.

Us poor PS3 owners... What ever shall we do?

Surely, you did not sleep through from 2005 - 2007?

To lie is to DELIBERATELY mislead. What possible reason could Sony have for deliberately misleading people about their support for a discontinued model? Don't you think it's rather more likely that their policy has unexpectedly changed as a result of the Other OS hack?

A corporation that lied? How wonderfully obscure!
