Forums - Sony - Sony's Blatant Lie (About Other OS)

If people actually read the terms of use they'd understand that this is a completely legal move on Sony's part

No matter how to twist it, the fact remains that Sony advertised Linux installable on PS3.
There are people that buy PS3s as cheap alternative for number crunching.

Regardless of how small the number of people that uses Linux, it still is a betrayal to their customers.

I am sure we'll see some class action lawsuit on this if it turns out to be... not April Fool's.

And these people who brought PS3's for number crunching updated their PS3's because?

They don’t use them for gaming, to access PSN or home so why would they give a flying copulation.

Me thinks you are just enjoying the cheap shots

Like it's already been pointed out if you use your PS3 for numbers crunching instead of gaming, you do not need to update the firmware numbers...( and you most likely never do, no matter what because there's no guarantee an update woudn't break your code..)

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I'm going to ask this again since it got lost in other stuff--

What is the point of installing another OS on your PS3, especially Linux?

I use it to stream media via a YDL samba server (the ps3 media server feature is terrible).

What kills me is that institutes that use the PS3 in a clustered environment, will not really be affected by this anyway.  When you are working with something as complicated as that and everything is working perfectly, no way in HELL you are going to update your firmware unless there is a problem.

What do you expect from a company which thought it was fine to "own" their customer's PCs by including a rootkit trojan in their music CDs?

Regardless of how awesome or not Sony's products are, no one can deny that they're pretty low in customer treatment and respect. Hopefully this episode will get more people to realize that.

My dislike of your comments grows by the day, please don't try and preach your hate to me, would you like me to start a thread about the number of lies MS have come out with?

I'm too much of a fanboy to just sit back and let you take shots at Sony when your own company of choice has a far worse reputation.

Lets talk RRoD, hell I'll just link.

And there are more.

The point of this is not to rant and rave, it's to demonstrate that all corporations and comglomorates make mistakes, that is the nature of the system, their vast size makes them prone to blunders.

We should all just stick to the original game debate, I would rather roast you over how Uncharted 2 graphics pwn Gears of War then get into what is an otherwise very dirty argument!

Sony used to support User Created Content on PSP firmware 1.5, and end up all their games outside Japan had been pirated to the ground. Dead Head Fred is a good game, and it only sells what? 1168 in the 1st week according to this site, and yet it had been downloaded illegally 14199 times according to another PSP ISO site.

Linux now can just be installed on a thumbdrive and can use it on any PC, I myself installed Slax on my USB drive because of its versatility, playing around for a while, install some programs, play some videos, browse a few websites, and went back to M$ Windows Vista. Why use PS3 for Linux when you can just plug in a USB into any PC and use it instead, if u really need to be different? I myself support M$ OS all the way.

Hence it makes me think this is a flame thread and should be closed plus OP banned.

That was before some guy publicly announced that he could hack the PS3 GameOS by going through OtherOS.

Be realistic guys.

Thread killed within the first 2 comments and the first comment is just hilarious.

I'd also like to add that a very small minority use this feature. It isn't a big of a deal as the first comment makes it sound. And out of that very very very small minority the majority of them would probablly use the hack. And the majority of Ps3 owners probablly don't know this feature exists.

Like the OS was a very necessary feature for the 33m ppl who bought a ps3, now watch how ppl starts acting like the OS feature was a big deal when b4 they didn't even give a rats about the damn thing all to to have some negative for the big bad SONY.

You mean like this

Looks like I will be putting my fat PS3 into storage then and get that Slim I've been considering for a while now.

Stop crying damage control saying this isn't a big feature by the way guys.  I'm sick of hearing people throw this feature in peoples faces over the last few years as Sony being somehow benevolent with their hardware by having it.  They've officially lied in the public domain, nobody should be saying this is a good thing for any company to do and most of you would definately crucify Microsoft for doing the same.

I'd like to see the posts that the people " throw this feature in peoples faces over the last few years as Sony being somehow benevolent with their hardware by having it"

What makes you think that when PS3 is hacked that Linux will be needed to use the hack? Linux is just used to open the door. Obviously removing it now won't stop the hackers, because they simply won't update. On the contrary, they will work harder, because they now have a legitimate reason to hack PS3.
So all this does is punish regular users who bought the launch model for a lot of money.

"Well certainly with the Xbox 360, we had some challenges at the launch. Once we identified that we took control of it. We wanted to do it right by our customers. Our customers are very important to us." -Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb (10/2013). Note: RRoD was fixed with the Jasper-revision 3 years after the launch of 360

"People don't pay attention to a lot of the details."-Yusuf Mehdi explaining why Xbone DRM scheme would succeed

"Fortunately we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity; it's called Xbox 360,”-Don Mattrick

Actually I think the opposite is true.

As I have always said I personally couldn't give a toss about this feature and so I dont care if they get rid of it.

Yes sony lied.. but so what?  They also lied when they said they had no plans for a Slim.  People didnt mind that lie.

MS and Ninty lie too and  I just wish that people would accept that Sony are no better and no worse than any other company in this regard.

The sooner people accept that corporations dont give a crap about anything other than making a profit the better for all of us.

+1
