Forums - Sony - Sony's Blatant Lie (About Other OS)

This decision makes ZERO sense to me and many others.

Exactly. It makes no sense at all to remove the Other OS feature at this point.

Looks like I will be putting my fat PS3 into storage then and get that Slim I've been considering for a while now.

Stop crying damage control saying this isn't a big feature by the way guys.  I'm sick of hearing people throw this feature in peoples faces over the last few years as Sony being somehow benevolent with their hardware by having it.  They've officially lied in the public domain, nobody should be saying this is a good thing for any company to do and most of you would definately crucify Microsoft for doing the same.

No need to trash M$ on this one...they have the 360 locked down like Chino.

So all this does is punish regular users who bought the launch model for a lot of money.

This was the part of the OP I stopped reading. Why? Why does the removal of 'other os'  do to 'regular users' in any way.

I didn't even consider putting Linux on the PS3 simply because its an inferior computer and why would I want to waste my time putting Linux on it? Even if that were not my opinion, how does the 'other os' feature help anyone who would be considered a regular user? It is not needed and it does not help you use any of the other features of the PS3.

It, like many original features, were just overkill and wasted resources.

PS3 becomes an even better media center (that can play absolutely any format) if you use Linux instead of PS3 Media Server. You can run emulators on PS3 using Linux and play them on your TV. With Linux, you can use Firefox on your PS3.

LOL "and many others" doesnt matter because more people wont even notice or hear about the feature being removed. A couple thousand will know about it out of 35 million

The funny part is that this action may actually make hackers more interested in hacking the PS3.

Before, all hackers could play around with Cell development and make PS3 apps with Sony's approval, now anyone who wants to do that has to strongly hack the PS3. The kind of strong hack that could perhaps be used for doing anything with the PS3, including playing pirated games.

.... It would make them more interested? I doubt it. If they weren't interested in before I doubt this would make people get a sudden urge to hack it. Serriously dude you need to take a breather. ....

Wait, I have to reply to this again given the update of the OP.

Look at what Geohot said:

When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat's Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that's how you want to play...

There you have it, proof that this action encourages hackers to go further.

Absolutly. Your telling me this guy wasnt interested in hacking the ps3 before this update even though he was already hacking it?

He is trying new kinds of hacks that he wasn't interested in before (as they weren't necessary). Just read what he said, could it be more explicit?

CFW = custom firmware.

Ok but this guy was already interested in hacking... Even if he succeeds nothing will come of it except his self righteous satisfaction unlike the one he just succeeded with.

Uh. No. If he succeeds he will have made a custom firmware that can be flashed to any PS3, which is one of the things that can result in easier piracy...
