Well, we won't really know, will we? The acquisition might have been because at MS they were interested in the tech itself to complement their own natural interface r&d, or because they were going to show something similar and they wanted to pre-empt patent litigation.
But it's all irrelevant, as the article focuses on the 3d full body motion sensing part via a depth IR camera, and Natal's approach on that is the double RGB/depth cameras and the specs when it comes to accuracy and image rate are similar for game design ( can I track individual fingers? what is the accuracy of the most relevant joints? what is the latency? )
