Forums - Sony - PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update - No More Other OS Bia@tches

Can't say this response to the PS3 hack comes as a surprise. And make no mistake; this is a direct response as the hack could lead to future malware and spyware being distributed to run on a PS3 using Linux.

I'd have to say the main users this should concern are those using server racks full of PS3s as clusters. Of course, none of those are being used to play games and have essentially no need to ever update firmwares.

I hate these updates TBH, which is why I never log into PSN as they take ages for me and who wants to wait for stuff that doesn't add anything relevant to their console? In any case I don't see a problem with them otherwise and for people who can get them in a timely manner they get to enjoy them whereas they can take over an hour for me.

Your interweb speed must be way worse than mine. But then again you are in the Waikato so you don't have access to glorious Saturn digital cable internet and instead have to satisfy yourself with sucking data through the narrow Telecom copper straw.

Im on the $60 unlimited plan which means certain areas of the internet are really slowed down hard and PSN is one of them. Otherwise I get 1.5MB per second on most downloads, unfortunately PSN is not one of those.

That's pretty sucky. I'm on 4Mbs download and it appears the speed on PSN is about the same as everything else. Still takes a while to download hundreds of MB, and downloading a multi-Gig game or demo is only an occasional thing esp since I'm on a 10Gig cap.

OT I always fancied the idea of putting Linux on my PS3 and turning it into a "real" computer. But never got onto it and by the sounds of things it wasn't as good or easy a fit as Linux on a PC. So I'm only going to miss the idea of it, it's not going to have any practical or meaningful effect for me.

Wasn't there a news article a month or 2 ago from Sony saying they had no plans to remove this feature?

I don't use this feature and I don't think most gamers do. It does suck for those that did. The PS3 continues to lose features most of them, this one included, I could careless about. The only one that bothered and still bothers me is the lack of PS2 BC. It does seem odd that the Sony continues to take away from features though. It's not the norm.

lol nothing happened !

Why yes there was. link: Sony: phat PS3s will not lose Other OS feature

Must be for april fools.

I hope this is a joke, cause this is horrible timing. I mean ZeroJay just released an update for his Zerogame Project, which makes emulation on YDL really easy. I hate to think that I can't just boot up and play the classics on my 52" TV screen via my PS3 (making multiplayer real easy). Instead, I'm going to have to go back to playing on my 15.6" laptop screen or the 2.8" screen on my Dingoo.

What I really don't get is the hack was only with the Phats, which in the next year or so may become the slim minority of PS3's out there. And it's not like Geohot was able to get all the way through the PS3's security. From several articles I have read, he merely chinked its armor a little. By the time he had gotten all they through, if he even could, and Blu-ray discs and burners prices dropped to a point where many could buy them, this gen would have been over. I just think this is a bad idea on Sony's part.

That's all they got out of trying to hack the thing. A option disabled for the rest of us.

I've never gotten around to using the other os feature, but it was nice to have it there. Insuring that, if I at some point wanted to, I could use it.

Check out my game about moles ^

not a big deal
