I'm not going to be surprised if any potential lawsuits on this are failures, but that will probably be more because of the low number of affected people than because of the practice itself.

The point that I'm trying to make, and that I don't actually like of course, is that even multiplayer - being run on dedicated servers or requiring centralized authentication - is already a time-based, conditional free service. A selling point, maybe, but not a contractual obligation on Sony's side.
Sad, I know. But yes, I do agree that they dared to make this move because of the low number of people acually affected by the change.
