Actually, on this subject, there's an old NES game that I used to LOVE as a kid, but I don't remember the title, or much about it. It felt Kid Icarus-ish (but with shorter sprites) since you could jump up to get to other parts of the dungeon. And you start outside, on the right of the screen, walk left, and fall into a dungeon. I have tried to download any game with a title that COULD have been this game, but I've yet to find it. I don't even really remember the gameplay, I just remember loving the game. I must find it.

Long shot, but does this look familiar?

It's the closest I can think of...

Actually YES that looks familiar, what is it? I'll have to try it out to be sure.

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee is the closest to retro that I've played in a while.

Heroes of Might and magic III
Age of Empires 2
CS 1.6 (well, not quite retro yet, but getting there)
Starcraft (as CS 1.6)

So I've been on a complete retro gaming binge lately. Civilization 1, Battletoads, Space Quest 3, Crystalis, and plenty of other old NES and PC games mostly. What I want to ask is what are your favorite old games that you still bust out every once in a while? And any other old games that you may suggest to me.

Game Room on XBox has put me in a retro mode FAR longer than I had expected.  The whole feeling like you are in your own arcade kicks it to another level to me. Yes, it has had hiccups along the way, but it is still there.  Thet Game Room framework, for me, brings back the old time of playing for high score and completing more goals.  The have an initial mix of classic stuff, and also stuff I never saw before.  The stuff may be TOO old for you though.

Talking about the no-sword run here would have been fine =) it's still retro gaming. In terms of limiting yourself in Zelda games though, my favorite thing to do is the 3-heart challenge in OoT. I think it's the only Zelda where you don't have to pick up ANY heart containers (I've tried in others). Couple of rules though, for one, don't get the defense thing near the end, that's cheating =P. Then there's the easy 3-heart challenge where you use fairies, or the hard where you don't use any faeries. Best I've done was go through the whole game never having more than 1 fairy on me, I've been meaning to go back and play it again and do a no-fairy 3-heart challenge =)

Seriously though, I'll have to check the other parts of the trilogy out sometime.

Haha and try out Battletoads again sometime, it's not NEARLY as hard as I remembered it to be.

Well, I didn't want it to seem like one game was starting to take over the thread. But I'll give that a shot my next time through the game. The hardest challenge I did was old one on the back of the Nintendo Power trading cards for Link to the Past. I remember the details well: 13 hearts (bare minimum, no HC from the sanctuary), green armor, level 3 sword, regular magic level (meaning no half-MP consumption guy), and no bottles. Given that a hit from Ganon took 6 hearts, I remember that being quite tough to do...

The Ocarina of Time 3 heart challenge is VERY hard, since the shadow temple boss (bongo bongo or something?) can one shot you easily, he's the hardest to dodge 100%. He was the reason I even needed one fairy. Ganon, Dark Link, EASY, but Bongo Bongo can mess me up pretty easily.

I shall check some of those out, for now I'm busy with:
Are we There Yet? (great little puzzle collection game)
Space Quest 3
Xenogears
Saga Frontier
Parasite Eve
Vagrant Story
Civilization 1
Misc. NES games.

Maybe PS1 isn't so "retro" but I've been craving those games for a while. I shall take look at some of those you'd all mentioned later =)

@lestatdark,
Great list there! I've played mostly all of them. Theme Hospital, Indy 4500, and Yoda Stories and 4D Stunts are the only ones I haven't played.

Parasite Eve and Xenogears should be your top priority, but since i'm heavily Parasite Eve biased (it's my second favourite game of all time), you must take my word with a grain of salt xD.

I love 4D Stunts, it's the precursor to every game in which you have manageable tracks. You can create your own tracks, and since there are hundreds of pieces, the combination are virtually infinite. Plus, there's a huge internet community behind the game still in this day (One of the largest for a 19 year old game) and tournaments are still organized (via replay visualizations). All this in a 1 MB package xD

I second Parasite Eve.

And since I'm not as biased as Lestat, its worth listening to me

Should be talk about your Grandia or Lunar bias?

As long as we talk about Lunars on Sega CD and Grandia 1 and 2

Milennia > Feena. Just saying...

What a noob. Feena > Elena > Millenia.

pffft, Stiletto Heels >> Kiddy personality

YES! Great games! Man, I almost regret making this thread, I'll be in a retro-game phase for like 2 years at this rate =)

But I don't regret it because it's full of awesome, and dunno001 might help me find that game I've been trying to remember for about 10 years now =)

I have played through Metroid and Super Metroid lately. I play Ice Climbers, old 2D Marios and Zeldas a lot.

That's Legacy of the Wizard, one of the games I recommended before. Google up some more images of it if you remember more of the game.
