I took out my first Royal Ludroth this morning. Man was that fun, i broke off its tail. i am really liking the switch axe, its so beast. The Qurupeco armor i have is really helpful. I unlocked the barrioth quest, does it use any elemental attacks?

Again, this game is so much fun and the boss monsters are so cool.

the armour skill system here is preety confusing, its gunna take me forever to work out the best armourto use, since its better to use peices from different sets rather using all jaggi or a;; ludroth armour for example

No, it's best to use full sets of armor instead of several parts! Allow me to elaborate:

For instance, each Kurrupeko armor piece gives us 2 points of Defence. When we have a full set of Kurrupeko (5x 2 skill points = 10 points) we unlock the skill itself, Defence Up (S). At 15 we get Defence Up (M) and at 20 Defence Up (L).

Of course, you can have 4 pieces of Kurrupeko armor (8 points) and apply a +2 point Defence Decoration to another pice of armor or your weapon and still unlock the skill. Be wary though, many armors have sideffects as well, for instance my Barroth armor gives me -1 Expert (-10% affinity = 1 out of 10 hits is a dull) so I added a +1 Expert decoration to my weapon to offset that

well thats kind of what I meant, by using decorations (and charms!) you can unlock loads more skills than simply going for full sets, its just a bitch working it all out

Edit:  here is a late game example. if you used

  Defense Name Slots Gem
32 Hunter Cap G OO- Guard +3
44 Beriolos Vest G --- ---
44 Beriolos Guard G O-- Guard +1
44 Beriolos Coat G OOO Guard +3
32 Hunter Leggings G OO- Guard +3
Charm Guard +4 Fort Stone O Guard +1

Skills: Guard +2, Evade +2

then you get guard + 2 and evade + 2 which you don't get from full armour sets

Precicely. We all are pretty much at the start of our games, so full armor sets make much more sense. Most people here don't even forge any decorations, so only a full armor set will give them the skill.

oh absoloutely, at the moment getting full sets is much simpler and easier I was just saying that using charms, decoration and mixing armour can give you some really good combinations if your willing to sit down and work it all out

1) I highly recommend a Lance for your first time against a Barroth, he's going to be tough; really tough.

2) No elemetal attacks, just brute force. You should equip a Fire or Water weapon, though (he's weak to fire when he's not covered in mud, water attacks if he is)

3) When he dusts off his mud, STAY AWAY. When you see the last pice falling, charge for 1-2 hits.

4) When he goes into berserk, don't try to attack him! Just evade until he gets tired again.

5) Don't you dare get into this fight without 10 Potions and 10 Whetstones.

6) Pitfall traps are also very useful (cut off his tail, drop the mud, etc)

7) It's hard, but try to keep him from re-mudding.

8) Good luck

3) will do

4) will do, but is it obvious when he switches from beserk to regular

5) lol, i always carry 10 portions, mega potions, and 20 whetstones when i face a boss monster

4) It's very obvious. He's painfully fast, and he has white smoke coming over his head lol.

7) Whe you see him rushing for the mud lake, rush his hands. It's his weakest spot. If you're going to use the hammer, hammer the sh*t out of him until he stops.

8) No prob. Tell me how it goes, I'll be here for any more guidance

Eh, I've switch axed Barroth before, the best time is when he's remudding or collapsed.

The easiest way to kill him though is to murder his legs, don't even worry about the mud it's all for show.

If you take out his legs, he will trip on his charges or just go slower period, even when angry he's slower.

He'll spend more time trying to get ants than to remud.

Yeah, this.  Switch Axe works fine for this battle.  Just evade when he rages, get your hits in when you can, and say Olé everytime he runs past you.

Roll, I tried to put a lot of helpful info on the front page, you should check through it, feels like I'm wasting my time typing it all.

You can't sever his tail / break his head though when he's mudded. Also, it's quite tough to make him trip unless you're using a very powerful weapon (with my spiral lance I always aimed for the legs and he tripped like 3 times maximum).
