My main gripe is the lack of a story. It is really hurting my review score atm. I'm at around an 8 currently. and I usually always go down. Maybe it will get better as I go.

The same reviewer gave Eternal Sonata an 8.3. EB's taste and mine about what makes a good JRPG are the polar opposite.

Tales of Vesperia, Valkyria Chronicles & Final Fantasy XIII are way better then Lost Odyssey IMO (minus the 1000 Years of Dreams stories). I haven't played the game yet, but Disgaea 3 should be way better as well (since people say that it was better then Disgaea 2 which was also awesome). Fragile Dreams might get bashed on gameplay-wise, but reviewers and gamers all around say that it has a deep and moving storyline, a fantastic atmosphere, wonderful visuals, great characters & amazing music. There is also Demon Soul. And by the gamers who are playing Resonance of Fate, alot of them are saying its an awesome game. Also, lets not forget what will inevitably be the GREATEST rpg then generation, Xenoblade :) The Japanese haven't lost it at all.

I have to play Valkyria Chronicles to see your point of view. I will try to do so soon enough.
