Can ps3 play any ps2 games as 360 plays some Xbox ones....

No, the current playstation3 sold by sony does not play ANY PS2 GAMES

howerever, every model plays all PS1 titles, and GOD OF WAR COLLECTION is a remastered version of the GOD OF WAR GAMES ON ps2, and was released for PS3

only the older ps3 phat models (2006-7) can play ps2 games currently.
you can check on the playstation support pages for the list.
Every PS3 can play all PS1 games though.

PS2 backward compatability is gone in newer models, but may come back at some later stage via firmware updates (definately not confirmed though)

You can play every single PS2 game on your PS3, but only if you own a PS3 with backward compatibility, mostly referred to as BC. If you are planning on buying a slim, then you are out of luck.

I have a backwards compatible system and not all games work well on it. I found Scarface to be unplayable. games like GTA series worked fine though.
