Forums - Nintendo - Reggie: Move is “Wii-too”

You cannot infer from Reggies statements here about the prospects of the PS Move by his reaction to it. In addition to this, I bet he is about 10* more concerned with what the Wii audience thinks and what his potential audience thinks than the <25% of the market which owns a PS3 might think. Hes not going after a fraction of a fraction of PS3 users who might be interested in the Wii when his company has bigger markets still not yet fully tapped out.

Yes Sony have some pretty great game studios, but do they have the potential to bring out Wii X games which capture the mass markets attention, especially when Sony have to split their time between normal and Move control schemes? At this point without proof of Sony diverting even 33% of their resources to Move related projects he has little to worry about.

I seem to recall mentioning that "potential Wii audience" you speak of in my post. In case you missed it, here it is again 'And people yet to get into this generation can say. "Cool, I can get excellent HD games AND Wiimote style games all in one package" *does the maths* "Yep and it'll be cheaper overall to get PS3+Move than to get PS3 + Wii"'. Such people will say the same thing about Natal, and it'll be the cheapest of all HD+motion control options to boot; which is why Kevin Butler had to talk smack about Natal. Fact is Move (and Natal) are seeking to make inroads into that not yet fully tapped out market you mention. A market that heretofore was solely Nintendo's. Reggie would be stupid to not to worry, because the motion control hardware Sony and MS have produced are every bit as good as Wii's, which means Wii stands to lose a substantial amount of the blue ocean if they don't front foot it.

You can infer plenty about their level of concern over the potential of the competition by how aggressively they bag it. At this point I'd say Reggie is swinging harder than I've ever seen against the PS3. Up to now Nintendo really has been able to ignore the PS3 as an irrelevance; except in Japan, and even then only recently and only to a lesser degree.

And in reality he really does need to worry about his Wii install base, because there is potential for Wii owners to look at the grass on the other side of the fence and seriously consider giving it a nibble. Not because the motion controls are (or even seem) better or bring anything substantially new, but because on the other side of the fence there are tasty morsels not related to motion controls that serve as inducements.

And since Reggie talked smack about both Move and Natal what I'm saying pretty much applies to the Natal threat to Wii as well.

Ninty can't rest on it's current suite of games and applications zand say, well we've got all that so you don't need PS Move or Natal. They've got to say "Look we've got all this stuff coming for you too."

I didn't notice him throwing vitality sensor out there. Did I miss that, or did he not mention it?

People who got the PS3 had to first value the experience the PS3 offered over the Wii. They had a choice, Wii OR PS3 and the PS3 audience chose the latter and not the former. There is already a level of disinterest in what the Wii offers already inherent in the PS3s audience. Therefore any games trying to offer the same experience on the PS3 as on the Wii would face the same hurdle of disinterest.

You cannot assume that copy cat games will be successful. Most instances of copycatism have landed the copy cat in the shadow of the forerunner. There are no copycat WoWs, Diablo clones, Halo clones, etc which have done better than their source of inspiration. In addition to this the copy cat games on the Wii have fallen flat on their faces, even sequels of the same games have failed to make headway.

Finally Apple has proved that competitors chasing after their shadow with copy cat products which in many instances are better than the iPods/iTouches they seek to replicate fall foul of the overall ecosystem and momentum Apple produced. In this case whilst Sony has a somewhat captive audience within their PS3 population, the momentum outside that audience is going Nintendos way.

You can infer plenty about their level of concern over the potential of the competition by how aggressively they bag it. Not really. He could have been concerned and not said anything. Not every company will bag a product even if they are concerned about it and not every company will refrain from bagging products which they aren't concerned about. You cannot infer what his concerns are from how he talks about the PS Move and Natal, hes a good public speaker so he knows how to present an image.

Why would people who already have invested $499 in the Wii, $150 in controllers + X in games want to go out and buy a product which costs even more than they paid for originally for a marginally complimentry experience? If they were that interested in the PS3 then they would have bought one instead of the Wii, this relates to my first statements about PS3 owners interested in Wii.

And since Reggie talked smack about both Move and Natal what I'm saying pretty much applies to the Natal threat to Wii as well.

All he said about Natal was that he didn't know enough to comment. Even if he slammed Natal I wouldn't be upset.

Ninty can't rest on it's current suite of games and applications zand say, well we've got all that so you don't need PS Move or Natal. They've got to say "Look we've got all this stuff coming for you too."

Yeah he talked about their vitality sensor it was linked in from someone else.

As far as the Wii is concerned his company is devoting 100% of their efforts to the Wii/DS and they aren't splitting their time between different control schemes and they can prototype 3 games for every one game Sony can for similar effort. That is the real strength of Nintendo, so long as they can keep pumping out a couple of evergreen titles per year they can sustain their massive momentum seemingly indefinately.

I am extremely.....EXTREMELY dissapointed in Reggie. Why the need for the smack? Why? I never heard Howard Lincoln or Minoru Arakawa talk crap about their competitiors. They just kept their heads down and performed.

*Sigh*

I too prefer that he doesn't say anything, but look at it from his perspective what would you do if you're constantly asked at every interview just the one single question?

Btw who are those people?

Ahh, thanks!

Minoru Arakawa and Howard Lincoln were in charge of NOA matters in the 1990s. One of Lincoln's memorable quotes is (paraphrased): "Why buy a Silicon Workstation for $10,000 if a video game console for $199 offers pretty much the same performance."

That's keeping your head down and performing, sure.

That is INCREDIBLY SUGGESTIVE quoting you're using there. You do realize that Silicon Graphics was part of the N64 dream team and developed the graphics chip for the N64, right? That was not even close to dissing SGI whatsoever.

Simple:

"I understand that competitors are making motion controlled products as well, which is great for the industry. We feel we have a really solid product on the market and are going to keep making great content for that".

Sony themselves admitted they were inspired by the Wii, why are people still claiming otherwise?

I think this is pretty much his response to sony's ad

So, he revealed Wii2? made by Sony?

yep so if nintendo has a wii2 it will be copying sony :P

its called competition, you gotta get use to the backlash from company's.. this Reggie talk is more of a return comment to what Sony did with that ad lol
