I think VGC does a great job, but I have a hard time to believe this. It is always hard to say something like this without getting flamed or banned, but I will give it a shot.

The main tracking services like NPD, chart-track and Media Create are not showing this shift in sales.

NPD for US only really showed that Xbox 360 sells a lot of software. Bioshock 2 just topped the charts last month for example. Chart-track reported some strong Xbox 360 sales as well. Sure MAG, FFXIII and Heavy Rain had decent to good sales on the PS3, too. Media Create for Japanese sales is easy. But except the relaunch of RE 5, Star Ocean and RoF, there was no really big PS3 game in Japan this year. And those three combined sold like 400k this year.

Looking at worldwide sales for the PS3 software (especially older and smaller games) makes me wonder.

  • GTA IV PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version 2:1 last week
  • Madden NFL 10 PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version almost 3:1 (this game is basically US only)
  • Sonics ultimate Genesis collection PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version almost 3:1
  • UFC 2009 undisputed PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version 2:1
  • Sega Allstar Racing PS3 outsold Xbox 360 version even though the Xbox 360 version has exclusive content
  • Need for Speed shift sold 11k and was not even in the charts for Xbox 360, so at least 2:1
  • Army of Two the 40th day PS3 outsold Xbox 360 almost 2:1 last week (The first one is still on the charts but only for the PS3)
  • Red Faction Guerrilla is on the charts again for PS3 only.
  • Same for CoD WaW and Dead Space.

I have no doubts that MAG, FF, Heavy Rain sold well, but I doubt that the older games sell way better on PS3 suddenly. especially with no tracking service confirming this in any way. And I doubt that Games on Demand is that big on Xbox 360 that it could eat so many retail-sales of the older games.

GTA: PS centric title last gen, maybe new addopters buy it more then the more online gaming oriented 360 owners? GTA4 has an online component, but FPSs are more popular. Xbox 360 version did sell more than PS3 version overall. That is more important than last gens userbase.

Madden: its only for a couple of week... maybe a pricedrop for the PS3 version? I doubt they will cut the price of the PS3 version and not the 360 version.

SUGC: that game did better on the PS3 from the go, so its no surprise that the leggs are better IMO :|

UFC: Now that is odd, but maybe the budget re-release helped Budget titles tend to have great legs on the PS3

NFS:S: oh common, NFS is a racing game, and racing games ( especially NFS) allways did better on Sony platforms...  accepted

AoT2: that is odd... the first title is explainable with the budget re-release, and lack of AAA 3rd preson cover shooters on the PS3, but the second beats me :|

RF:G: you get that game for free is I recall correctly, if you redeem your Darksider coupon Just for the PS3?

CoD and DS: well DS is an action/adventure/horror title, its in the budget line, so thats plausable, What? Why is this plausible? Because of the genre? but CoD... well, beats me :-S

I think especially the more casual games like Sega All Star Racing or Vancouver should do a better job on the Xbox 360, because it is the console with a more casual audience. Sure, the Wii owns this market but for Xbox 360 vs PS3 I think the Xbox 360 is more casual. The price tag, bundles with Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones or Sega Superstar tennis or for last holiday Lego Batman and PURE secured a lot of casuals.

I don't get why games like Midnight Club LA appears on the chart after 73 weeks. Of course only on PS3.

The advantage the PS3 has with more consoles sold right now doesn't help in the West. There is a 20k difference without Japanese sales and all the games I listed before did not sell in Japan in the first place.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Expect HR to reappear from time in the coming year as well :D

I don't see how this is impressive for PS3...

Sony has released MAG, White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain and now GoW III. And Microsoft has had no exclusives from themselves yet this year.

We will see where we are at by the end of September. Let's do a comparison after Halo: Reach, Crackdown 2, and Alan Wake are out.

MAG, White Knight Chronicles and Heavy Rain are strong games, but they all are all new IPs. GoW 3 is not included into this data yet. Beside exclusive titles we should thank FFXIII for strong PS3 software sales.

Also 360 always selling FPS genre better and there are 2 big FPS games where released in Q1: Bioshock 2 and Battlefield BC2

The ps3 has done very well so far this year software wise. I think that the 360 will manage to pull away by the end of the year but it seems those higher weekly sales are really helping the ps3 atm.

Three games that aren't exactly the biggest hitters out there and GOW3 whose sales are not yet included.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Mass Effect 2 together erase all the sales from MAG, Heavy Rain and WKC probably, and yet, the PS3 (with some 5.6 million units less on the market) manages to outsell the 360? For a platform with fewer owners and with a lower attach rate, consistently outselling the other HD-console is an achievement. Yes, of course, the "but who would've thought that at the beginning of the generation"-comment is always around the corner, but this is here and now. Based on previous years, this ís an achievement for the PS3. Nevertheless, it'll be interesting to see what Natal, a possible slim and Halo Reach can do.

Fresh numbers came up. Looks like PS3 wil have more software Q1.

PS3 22,411,374

360 21,347,333

Its funny that if I told people in 2005 that in 2010, Sony and Microsoft platforms would be tied in software sales...I would be laughed at. Fastforward 5 years later and people are happy it is so...

they would have also laughed at a 600 lauch price.

but this is good for M$, and xbox, lol Sony saved their asses this gen, that's the real irony

You'd also be laughed at if you said that in 2007 or 2008 but for different reasons.

I have thought about that phenomenon too, that most PS3 games have these insane legs.

Personally I think it's a tracking error based on a sample that ain't representative of the whole market. It will be worked on and fixed though, ioi always keeps tweaking the tracked sample to make it represent the whole market as well as possible.

Good point, another possibility is the fact that the PS3 game might be undertracked and ioi is simply adjusting it over time, one example is this:

First of all, going back to JT's line of questioning, can you give us an idea as to this 13 million GTA 4 units, how many of those are Xbox 360 platform? So what's the addressable market for the downloadable The Lost and Damned.

Lainie Goldstein

It's approximately 50/50, Ed.

Edward Williams - BMO Capital Markets

And what about a geographic breakdown, U.S. versus international?

Lainie Goldstein

It's about 50/50 there as well.

Benjamin Feder

50/50 generally.

Lainie Goldstein

50/50 over both, right.

So sales of GTAIV were about 50/50 on 360/PS3 but that's not what we have here on VGC, and to the best of my knowledge, it's never been that way. Anyways, only ioi knows.
