How could you not like Gears of War 3?
EDIT SHIT I MEANT GEARS OF WAR 2!
Gears of War 3 has a unique story, it has amazing graphics, it has amazing combat, it has a lengthy single player mode, it has perfect single player cooperative. it has Horde mode, it has fixed it’s broken multiplayer, and it has amazing and unique multiplayer modes. Gears of War 3 is the whole package.
Gears of War 2’s story is amazing, creative, and top notch. Has anyone seen anything like it in other games? I didn’t think so, and they’ll probably never see giant worms sinking cites and lambent locusts in any other game this gen. it can be serious and silly at times, which makes it appeal to pretty much everyone. For example, the worm level where you have to cut the arteries is silly, and the level where you fight the giant fish is serious. Pretty much everyone likes one of those levels.
Is everyone tired of six hour single player shooters? Well, that’s not the case with Gears of War 2; it has an 8-12 hour single player campaign with no slow moments. It has the casual mode for people who have never player a third person shooter, and it has insane mode for experienced people. This ensures that anyone can enjoy this masterpiece.
The cooperative modes in gears of War 3 are amazingly fun. To start, the single player cooperative is done perfectly, nobody is left doing nothing; even during the boss fights. One might argue that there is only 2-player cooperative while Halo 3 has 4-player. Well this is an easy question to answer, Gears of War franchise can only have a 2-player cooperative single player because we don’t want people skipping cut scenes and running the story for us. Also, if there was 4-player cooperative in gears of War 2, one person would be better and rush through the game while the other players would be trying to catch up to him. Now let’s talk about Horde mode, it is done very well. The Horde consists of 50 waves that constantly get more difficult. This mode is with 5 players, which means you can find 4 other random people in the world or from your friends list to play. It is really similar to the concept of Firefight and Nazi Zombies. So if you like those, you will most likely like Horde mode.
Now let’s talk about the multiplayer modes, because this is arguably the most important thing in the game. Gears of War 2 has been burned for its laggy out of the box multiplayer, this has been improved on many times. The lag is minimal now, can act up sometimes, but for the most part it’s gone. The modes in multiplayer are similar to Gears of War (The first one), but added some new ones as well. These modes are called Guardian, Wingman, and Submission. Guardian is similar to assassination in Halo 3, Wingman is when they split 10 players into five teams to fight, and Submission is Capture the Flag with a body. I personally like all these modes, and I hope the entire Gears of War community does as well.
Tired of impossible achievements, or a ranking system that’s too easy? This is where Gears of War 2 exceeds. The ranking system in Gears of War 2 is very difficult to get level 100 in, however, Epic Games always has double/ Triple experience near holidays, this ensures that everyone has an equal chance at getting high scores. The achievements in Gears of War 2 are easily gotten; I personally got all the original achievements after the first year I got the game (I didn’t get the DLC achievements yet). Players like this because it adds on their gamerscore and they weren’t too easy to get.
Speaking of DLC, Gears 2 has a lot of great content available for download. You can buy separate maps packs, an add-on to the single player, or all at once for only 20000 Microsoft points (Correct me if I’m wrong). Road to Ruin, the add-on to the single player, is really fun. It can be played two ways, you can play it with stealth, or you can go guns blazing. The multiplayer maps are worth the money as well, Gears of War 2 comes with 5 free maps from the original game, and 3 map packs available for money. Each of them are very good (My personal favorite is Dark corners map pack). These items will have people player for a long time.
What holds all of these wonderful things together are the diversity of enemies and combat. Gears of War 2 has tiny enemies such as the wretch, and huge enemies such as the Brumach. The game has Rock Worms that live in the ground, to Reavers that fly high in the air. Each enemy has their own purpose, some you can use for cover, some you ride, some you will chainsaw 90% percent of the time. Speaking of cool and unique enemies, gears of War 2 bosses are neat. From the Giant worm, to the Giant fish, all the way to Scorge all the bosses are cool.
The graphics in this game are astonishing. The most amazing things in the game that stood out graphically were the teeth of the Giant worm, the level when you’re walking down the mountain before the Giant fish battle, the scenes where you’re underground looking for Nexus ETC. The physics engine and lighting engine has been improved a lot since the First Gears of War, you can tell by just playing it a minute (No joke).
The last thing I want to talk about is the best combat I’ve ever seen. The AI reacts to every shot you shoot at them, from things like holding their shoulder when shot there, to crawling on the ground from shooting their legs. When an Enemy is down you have a bunch of different options for killing them. You can curb stomp them, hit them with you gun two different ways (pressing different buttons), held them hostage and use them for a shield, or chainsaw them. Remember to do it fast; the AI is so smart they can revive each other! When the character your playing is down, a teammate can revive the downed character at any time. This utilizes teamwork throughout the game. The guns are also unique, from flame throwers to the mulcher, hammerburst to the longshot, the automatic pistol to the lancer, this game has some of the best weapons ever. Will any game top this, I’m not sure, probably not his gen though (in my opinion).
