Forums - Microsoft - Impression: Splinter Cell: Conviction the good and the ba

Microsoft released the demo for Splinter Cell: Conviction recently onto Xbox Live. The small snippet of the game offers players a taste of what to expect from the latest game in the franchise.

After five plus long years in development, Ubisoft is finally ready to drop Splinter Cell: Conviction. The demo released recently gave players something to really get excited about. I played through it several times on varying difficulty. I even played through the whole demo in stealth for the hell of it.

The Good

  • The presentation in Splinter Cell: Conviction is pretty good with atmospheric settings and details to animations. In front of the warehouse you will notice the trees and grass swaying in the wind.

  • The bathroom interrogation scene was intense as you bash the other person’s head into the sinks several times. Great environmental interaction in the game.

  • The way clues and back story is given is through a grainy projection onto a wall. This helps with the immersion factor immensely.

  • The “mark and execute” is reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed’s awesome “lock and assassinate” feature.

  • Ubisoft’s implementation of the “silhouette” adds some tactical advantage by allowing you to trick enemies into looking at where you were at. This allows you to flank them from behind after circling around. This is similar to Metal Gear’s “tap on wall” move.

The Bad

  • Ubisoft’s decision to ditch the trademark night vision goggles for sonar vision was annoying. I didn’t like the fact that sonar vision showed where everyone was located even through walls and buildings.

  • Despite the solid presentation, the graphics are rough around the edges. The modified version of Unreal Engine 2.5, which was primarily used for last gen consoles is really showing its age in the game. Disappointingly the game has been confirmed to be running at a sub-HD resolution (1024×576).

Besides these minor niggling issues, the demo was pretty awesome and there really wasn’t much to complain about. The demo seems to have that oldschool Metal Gear/Chaos Theory meticulous and methodical fun factor going for it.

The demo, was a choppy one. By that I mean, it showed you different gameplay elements, but felt to much like a tech demo.

However, it gave you the oppurtunity to see the gameplay elements you will be using. Of which is definately the right direction for stealth games. Finally in a stealth game you dont feel poorly controlled and slow. You feel, 'the best' at what you do. All while still be very difficult and in need of stealth.

Fantastic Mark and execute is only usable after a hand to hand take down of which you can line up 2 executes. Then it's run to hide. Fantastic stuff.

Graphics are good, but not the best. This isnt even UE3. It's a modified UE2.5.

Still it looks the part.

But the game itself shows the stealth genre exactly how it's done.

Gonna be a fantastic stealth game.

I don't like how it goes greyscale when in shadows.
I prefer the old light meter other than that very good. No complaints. Roll on the 16th

The demo was really good
i usually dont like the stealth elements in games but i really enjoyed sneaking around in conviction
the graphics where great but i agree with lord flashheart : the grey filter when in shadows is a bit annoying.
I thought the cover system was the best yey and the first cover system better than gears 2.
I also liked the interogation section but i hope there not all the same because the interogations would get boring because i heard theres 16 in the game.
Overall the demo was great with a few flaws .
day 1 buy for me.

End of 2012 prediction:

xbox 360 : 73-75 million  playstation 3 : 72-74 million  wii : 104-105 million

Most hyped for :

Bioshock: infinte, The Last Of Us, Alan Wake's American Nightmare and Agent

apperantly it's not the Unreal engine though it's using some unreal technology

A couple of links have been posted on the forums saying it's a UE2.5 modded engine. Wiki states that to for SCC.

Ubisoft says no... someone linked it to me in another SC:C post

Splinter Cell: Conviction Demo = 1.3GB download and only 30 minutes of game play. I will give this demo a pass. I am waiting for reviews on the game. AAA game and it will be a purchase for me.

moded enough to call their own... what gets me is why isn't this 4xmsaa?  If it's this low res then it should fit each frame though the daughter chips 10megs for 4xmsaa like Alan Wake
