Nope, Amazing Mirror (GBA) also had local multiplayer iirc, through the main game.  And actually it was pretty awesome, though everyone also had their own screen.

In Kirby Wii I imagine it'd play more similar to a mix between NSMBWii and the Subspace Emissary mode in SSBB.  It could definitely work though, I think multiplayer's the future for 2D platformers...

I imagine that, a la Amazing Mirror, it would be highly doable to re-implement what NSMBWii did in a Kirby game. Though it'll lose the joy of Amazing Mirror where you would randomly run into one of the other Kirbys.
