Forums - Gaming - The Return of the Commodore 64 (not the old machines !)

The Commodore 64 is a machine beloved by many who grew up in the 1980s. Like me. Which is why it's fun to hear that it's parent brand is making a comeback.

A new company, Commodore USA, is currently digging through the rights to the ol' hardware, and once acquired, intends to release new models. Not a "classic" re-release, an all-new, 21st century computer-in-a-keyboard.

The Return of the Commodore 64

Brace yourself, lovers of all things retro, because the Commodore 64 will rise from the dead in all its keyboard form factor glory. It will probably be based on the Cybernet ZPC-GX31, although I hope it looks like this:

Utilitarian clean lines, hefty chunkiness, and glorious beige. That's the Commodore 64 everybody loves, not the travesty at the beginning of this post. Or maybe it's just me who loves it, because I still remember playing Pitstop, Summer Games, Star Wars, and the impossible-to-finish Ghostbusters in my school's computer lab, in between BASIC programming lessons and multiple-choice tests.

Then again, I wouldn't mind buying the Asus Eee Keyboard PC with a Commodore 64 logo on it:

Hopefully, Barry Altman—President and CEO of Commodore USA—is taking notes. [Engadget]

That's pretty funny. Will be interesting to see. Guess it'll be like prebuilt pc's :p

So much nostalgia fills me. Such incredible times of gaming in the mid 80's with the C64.

Never been so excited about hardware as when I bought my C64.

Aw, so it's just a casemod for your typical Wintel PC?

I want the content of the C64, not the form factor.

Let's face it people. The C64 is a dead 8bit technology which lives through emulation and collecting old hardware and games. I know I have quite a few pieces myself.

Making a keyboard with all the bells and whistles of a PC on it (although it sounds interesting) and sticking a C64 logo on it doesn't make it a revival. It makes it a marketing scheme.
