They put so much effort behind these things though, almost like a little brother trying desperately to impress his elders by one upping his big bro. Its probably a great game and review has been positive but I can't help but feel that BF2 is just a big comedic parody of MW2

That's how I see it.  They should try to stand on their own two feet rather than compare themselves to MW2 at every chance they can get.  As of right now, the comparison is that MW2 is higher rated and sold better, despite all of their spoofs and begging for attention.  If they spend less time spoofing and begging for comparisons they might be better off the next time.

if you don't know the difference between comparing yoursefl and differentiating yourself, I'm wasting my time with this comment because you obviously don't posses the ability to, because it couldn't be simpler.

It was funny, but that just reaffirms my position on DICE. They're the annoying kid in school. They need to shut up, stop attacking Modern Warfare 2, and just let their own game speak for itself.

*shrug* it's competition. At least it's friendly competition and not like the comments we see from the PR of Sony/Microsoft, Jaffe, Moleneux, Turn 10, etc.

If this is too hostile for you, I can't see how anybody can make an ad differentiating themselves from another product.

The only problem I have with this competition is that it's sprung purposely. Let me elaborate. Competition between Sony and Microsoft is bound to happen. After all, they're two big console manufacturers competing for a similar market. There's a similar case between Polyphony Digital and Turn 10. Both are developers who make the biggest racing games of their respective publishers. But with Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, you have 2 games that are fairly unrelated, and are really only competition because DICE won't shut up. They released at 2 very different times, have different styles of gameplay, and have a huge gap in sales and popularity. The only reason they're considered a competitor is because DICE and EA have been hyping them up as that for a while now. And many people (who are generally sheep) are willing to play into this, showing loyalty for an artificial and frankly stupid competition. It's just like the people that play into the consoles wars (which Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have so handily made for us).

There's nothing wrong with liking BC2 over MW2. They're both different types of games, and both are excellent games. However, seeing people play into this fake competition and be puppets of corporate hype really annoys me.

I've been starting this competition before the PS3 beta even came out =P

Don't imply that I'm a "sheep" I did this out of my own conscious will.

In fact, I've been doing this WAY before DICE even made their first jabs (from my memmory) at IW (Cake doesn't lie and dedicated servers)

DICE copied ME if anything =P

I'm not saying you're a sheep. I'm just saying that a lot of people are buying into an artificial competition between two very different games. If you chose to do this of your own accord, more power to you. I just feel like DICE is trying too hard to make MW2 their rival game, and it looks really lame (in my opinion). I'm not trying to shove that down anyone's throat. But still, these videos, as well as their comments, make DICE look like the kid in school that always tries to pick fights with the popular jocks (if that analogy makes any sense).

Wholikeswood: Jesus Christ, get off my back. I do have the right to tell DICE to shut up. I haven't been moderated yet, and telling a public gaming company to "shut up" is hardly a punishable offense on this site. Again, it's a company. I doubt they're reading this. And I would take these videos lightheartedly, except I haven't seen Infinity Ward make videos mocking BC2 (maybe because they're not insecure?), and DICE is just being annoying.

First of all, why are you giving the sense that Bad Company 2 is an inferior game that's not "worthy" of competing with MW2 directly? You make an analogy of a "kid" versus a "popular jock". I would have been interested in an argument that BC2 wasn't a substitue (as you had some point in that they aren't the same exact game. But then what game is? The debate for me would have been that BC2 had differences, but it was those very differences that made them better than MW2. That's what all competition is nowathese days. Differentiation or monopolistic competition, especially in a market where games all release at the same price) for MW2 and therefore does not compete with it.

But now you're shifting your argument (or at least making it sound like) BC2 has no right to "pick a fight" with MW2 because they're an "annoying kid" (inferior) going against "popular jocks" (superior). Very healthy attitude you have there.

And listen, the WHOLE POINT OF ADVERTISEMENT IS TO MAKE PEOPLE AWARE OF THE DIFFERENTIATING QUALITIES. *slams head against wall*. You're really just having your head out of reality if you don't understand why we have advertisement. We do not have a perfect world where everyone cares enough to do research for every single product in the market. In fact, it's overly demanding to do so.

We live in a world when a newcomer or a product that has no hype around it will be ignored. That is why we have advertising. You advertise to tell people what your differentiating qualtities are (against the competitors) and hopefully pull some market share. And comparing and contrasting yourself directly against a competitor is a strategy/method that can potentially help convince consumers to buy your product over other substitutes. What is wrong with that?

I understand if you're not arguing against marketing, but against people acting like dicks (like Sony, Microsoft, and all those other individuals sometimes do), but if Bad Company 2's friendly competition alone is too hostile for you and making you pull out your hair, then your scalp should be bleeding out right now with all the things in this forum and the outside world.

I'm not referring to their social status as a measure of quality, but rather, as a measure of behavior. In most cases, the annoying kid would actually probably be more successful in life. Stop over-analyzing this. I simply stated that MW2 was the popular jock (not implying that he was superior, since jocks are often assholes, but rather that he is more popular in general), and that BC2 was the annoying little kid (harping on MW2 even when the game did nothing to it). Modern Warfare 2 and Infinity Ward never did anything to slant Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and DICE. They just existed. It was DICE who started an artificial conflict with Infinity Ward in order to draw more attention to their upcoming game. After all, how could you build up hype more than by marking yourself as a competitor for the biggest shooter of all time (well, not counting Duck Hunt)?

And please, if you're going to argue with me, cut the pretentious bullshit. You don't need to pretend to slam your head against an imaginary internet wall because someone said something you disagree with. How e-impatient are you? It's kind of pathetic. And by the way, look at Modern Warfare 2, one of the biggest shooters ever with one of the biggest marketing campaigns ever. Did it need to brag about how it was different or better than the Halo or Gears series of games? No. It advertised its own merits, and grew its brand name to new heights. Now, I understand that advertising yourself as better than a competitor and mocking them is a strategy of losing or trailing competitors. We saw this with Sega back with the Saturn, we have had to deal with Apple's "Mac vs. PC" ads for years now, and we're even seeing Sony's new attacks against the Wii-mote and Natal. So we've established that this is a marketing strategy for companies that don't hold the top spot in a particular market. Fair enough, but that still doesn't make it right (in my opinion). Oh yeah, did I state that this was my opinion? Because God forbid I'm allowed to have one.

Also, look at the continued pretentious bullshit. I never talked about pulling out my hair or anything of the sort, while you make a post saying that you slammed your head against a wall because someone missed a point that you never brought up. If you have anger issues, there's always medication for that. Or you can talk to someone to help you deal with your pissy attitude. Whatever works.

"Stop over-analyzing this"

Oh come on, over analyzing? It's only your fault for using that popular image.

"And please, if you're going to argue with me, cut the pretentious bullshit."

PRETENTIOUS? Are you kidding me? Do you even read your own posts? Who's the one who proudly declared to lecture people in this forum?

"You don't need to pretend to slam your head against an imaginary internet wall because someone said something you disagree with"

I used that figure of speech because you're asking for something totally unrealistic, because the modern market is ALL ABOUT differentiating one's self. You don't HAVE to do so by direct comparison ads, but even with the "stand by its own merit" advertising is about differentiating. You cannot go against that. That's like denying 1+1=2.

"No. It advertised its own merits"

And that's great for MW2, but again, you have not convinced me why it is bad to simply compare yourself to another product, and differentiate yourself from them. It  can potentially backfire, with people like you holding negative sentiment for the game now, but from the forum posts that are simply laughing at the simple joke you can see that it has worked in favor of DICE. It is a valid strategy.

And fuck this "pretentious bullshit" or "over analyzing", and YES it is appropriate me for saying you're pulling your head out because you're making such a terribly big deal about this 1-2 minute ad that takes a friendly jab at "competiting games of this particular genre"

Really? An entire quote pyramyd over this? Questioning entire types of advertisement (comparison and contrast, parody, etc), and the mentality of differentiation and competitive spirit? REALLY? All said and done, YES it is proper for me to bang by head against my imaginery wall.

Hrmph. Every time I enter this thread, I'm forced to listen to one of the videos you loaded. That's just not worth it.

And by the way, if we're getting started on a quote tree, you're the one who responded to me. If you didn't want to have an argument (or even get a response from me at all), maybe you shouldn't have said anything to me. In fact, take that advice for the future. Never say anything to me again. Not even to this post. God knows I don't want to hear from you anymore.
