Yes. They sold around 38 million 360s. They have bestselling franchises like Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Gears of War, Mass Effect etc...

In terms of gaming the most significant would be the countries of mainland Europe (as a whole Europe is almost equal to the US as a console market, about the same if you include PC gaming) where Playstation is still synonymous with core gaming. Then there is Japan and South Korea which are huge markets for their populations. Australia is a bit like the UK in gaming preferences. Then there is all of Asia where gaming is less significant but at the sametime growing rapidly, especially in China and in MMO style games. Finally, South America, but I know very little as to the size of the gaming market there.

What's the console gaming market like in South Korea if you know? Do they mostly still play SC over there?

I think it's fairly big but the rapid growth MMOs and internet based gaming (and lots of Starcraft, lol) may have surpassed it now. They have the fastest net connections... anywhere I think. This is all second-hand info from friends though so take it with a pinch of salt.

Well I know about a year ago they were still big on SC. Heck, their pro-SC players were like celebrities there. I'm curious to how much recognition Sony/MS have over there though, if anyone knows?

I think they are doing good. But I still think Sony and Ninty are the bigger two. Microsoft needs to get their consoles to the super high sales to become a uber giant! :D

So? Its still a fact that proves that proves that PlayStation brand is 5X stronger. How many Xbox consoles sold over 100 millon? Or even 50 million? Hell, not even a Nintendo console sold over 100 million (notice i said console, not handheld)

Well the Ps2 is still selling decently for a 10 year old console...and psp is doing good in japan.Microsoft is not equal to Sony, but it is getting there.

A solid getting there worldwide.

In US I'd say near enough there, but outside US, particularly non-English speaking countries, MS brand awareness and position starts to weaken considerably.

ugh what are you talking about? This is about 'BRAND" image in the WORLD! a strong history really helps build that. Heck even my older relatives know what playstation and Sony are. Xbox? not so many....they are getting there but as of this moment? Nope not really

Ok lets look at right now.

PS3 is out selling 360.

Sony hardware is 33.6% of the market, MS 13.9%

Sony is the 3rd highest selling publisher, MS does not even make top 10

Software sold on Sony hardware is 2.59 millon, on MS hardware 2.04 million.

All you need to do is take a look at this weeks sales. Without the "Americas", the 360 only sold ~50k in the rest of the world, wheras the PS3 sold ~100k in the rest of the world.

I would say though, that the Xbox brand is now greater than the PS brand in the US, and possibly in the UK.

This time last year, the X360 was beating PS3 in Others, Europe and America. The Xbox can easily beat the PS3 in Europe/Others at any one time. For PS3 to beat the Xbox in America ... well even with the slim it's not made a dent.

Therefore

America - Xbox >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> PS3
Others - PS3 >> Xbox
Japan - PS3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Xbox

In that respect, Microsoft have a wider audience to sell to. As Others/Europe isn't as Sony dominated as you like to think.

But all in all, I believe Sony is bigger in gaming than Microsoft, as far as the current gen goes though, they're 100% equal if anything ..
