Forums - General - Where do human rights come from?

The issue of human rights fuels countless debates in our world. But from where do you believe they originate?

I think they were written after the French Revolution.

Human rights probably originated when humans began to colonize. When these people began working together to get food, land, etc., they probably began making simple rules/rights: Work and you will get food. These rules/rights are challenged by those who try to get around them. Some punished through execution or exiled. Many tribes began to realize that worshipping a god/goddess unifies the community. They then make gods out of powerful objects in nature, such as water, the sun, wind, etc. Once the groups accepted these gods, they could apply those rules to the religion and say that if you follow the rules, you will have rewards after death, but punishment should you disobey. This led to cooperation within the tribe. Religion also led to inspiration in battle. Believing that the gods are on your side is a great motivator to fight. Once these tribes conquered/unified their cultures/religions began to contradict each other, so some joined the two religions into one that both groups could accept.

Now for women's rights, those probably originate when men went out to hunt while women took care of the children. Because the man was providing the food, something a women(in general) couldn't do as well, men proclaimed themselves better through their religions and cultures.

But in the 21st century, religion has a smaller voice as world wide communication has taken hold. Humans now realize that we can be cooperative without the fear of religion thanks to laws and communities.

The current ones came from John Locke I believe. As to why people think the current set of human rights is the right one, I don't know. Eventually along will come soeone else and write something and the rights we have now will change.

Oh yeah, here, somethign about human rights:

Carlin makes me laugh so hard. Best comedian ever, wish he was still alive.

The notion of human rights stems from the idea that God endowed us all equally with a certain set of rights that we all have in a state of nature. This was a constant in both Locke, Hobbes, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and others.

It was originally a concept grounded in natural religion, basically, the idea of God who wasn't bound to historical religion, not the God who revealed junk to specific people, which was an arbitrary and cruel idea

God made man with certain inherent rights, which were the original human rights of natural law, life, liberty, property, pursuit of happiness. Now these laws were different depending on who you spoke to, but those were the general basics.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

they come from Humans (Society)

generally which ones people apply or dont apply varies by nation and what the people in that society vote for (Democracy shapes rights in many ways)

some are enshrined by a constitution or bill of rights, though again, they are still man made, technically all rights can also be taken away from people (by the state, etc)

Enforcement of man made laws

Might makes right.
