I see this primarily as an act of immoral totalitarianism in order to treat the symptoms of other problems ...

I’m willing to bet that the vast majority of the worst parents have a combination of several obvious problems including coming from abusive backgrounds, having an abysmal education, drug problems, and teen pregnancy; and almost all of these problems can be reduced resulting in a significant improvement in parenting over-time. By creating "Parenting Licences" you’re looking at eugenics in an attempt to breed out negative traits that potentially may lead to these problems, rather than try to deal with them in a more productive way.

Yes because clearly there are people out there unfit for parenting. Like should a guy who just got out of prison after 20 years for 2nd degree murder be allowed to have children? I don't think so.

Also I know this is controversial but I think you should have to have a certain amount of income to have children. Like should someone who makes $20,000/year be allowed to have like 4 kids when they clearly don't have the funds to properly support the children? The kids would be much better off in another family who can support them and put food on the table every day.

I think its a great idea. The main things it should look at is your IQ, history (ie criminal record), and income.

Sure, but I have no idea how you would enforce it.

I would love it if people had to take a test to be parents because there are some fucking stupid parents out there.

Just to be a devils advocate.

In special cases where you take the children away, the parent may decide they want another child.

If a parent had their children taken away because they were abusive to them, would you tell them they are not allowed to have any more children, or would you take their future children away from them when they are born?

Wouldn't it be more simple and perhaps even more humane to say "No, you've shown that you're an extremely bad parent, you can't have any more children"?

I don't see much difference between the two, because you can't enforce 'not having children' very well. You either have to stop people having sex (good luck with that), or require abortions, or take them away after people have them.

@Akvod

Some argue that weasel words are a bad idea.

But apart from that, how is it infringing on parents' rights? The checks would be only to see that the child is healthy and mentally OK. They could even be done at school, as long as it happens.

Presumption of innocence? Privacy? Unreasonable search and seizure?

For that matter, who provides the definition of "mentally OK": an idea that, when enshrined in law, has invariably been abused horribly? I would have hoped that by now we'd have learned from history as far as that goes.

I don't doubt that the people who support parental licensing mean well. But the ends, noble as they seem, are not sufficient to justify the means.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

No. People have the right to make babies.

Once you go down the road on deciding who has the right to reproduce it's scarily close to deciding who has the right to live. I'm anti-eugenics in a fairly big way.

Hate to ask this, but who gave them this right to have babies?

Seriously this idea is awful, Its like kidnapping your babies!!!

I definitely do but I doubt this idea could ever actually curb emotional abuse in its tracks since it's hard to identify to begin with.
