Forums - Microsoft - Why Halo Reach will outsell Halo 3

Ok so a few people here believe that Halo Reach stands absoloutely no chance to outsell Halo 3, or at least a difficult task. dont think it will reach wont have as good of legs as H3 did and does, its also unknown if the franchise is still favored as it once was

Firstly I have to talk about this silly debate about Halo Wars and ODST putting players off Reach. Consumers arn't stupid. This is why Halo Wars only sold 600k first week, pales in comparison to the 3.8 million Halo 3 put up doesn't it?. So apparantly a "ton" of people bought Halo Wars unaware it was an RTS (because they're stupid) and decided that they were done with the Halo franchise, that it was stagnating, then Halo 3 ODST (CLEARLY) not a sequel of any kind, sells 2.2 mill first week. I was one of the few naive people that thought ODST could match Halo 3 numbers, but it was never going to happen. Consumers knew this was overpriced and an expansion like game, probably choosing to pick the game up used for the campaign and non matchmaking firefight. What put you off of Halo 3 but not ODST? if ODST is a over priced expansion why did you buy it on release but never bought Halo3 yet?

Halo Wars and ODST have not put anyone off the Halo franchise. I firmly believe there are only a handful of people that have played Halo 3 and either/both Halo Wars and ODST, that feel the series is stagnating.

Furthermore Reach doesn't need to have a "4" in front of it to sell, the buying public arnt given enough credit, they're not mindless zombies that can't read the back of a game. Halo Wars was an RTS, and ODST was, like I said, clearly an expansion type game. wasnt there a bunch of articles last year of people upset and wanting to return wars b/c they didnt know it was a RTS? http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=62852

Marketing wise, ODST and Wars didn't get anywhere near what Halo 3 did, but you can bet your bottom dollar Reach will. They're either going to match or try and outdo what Halo 3 did.

My next point goes in favour of and against Halo Reach selling more.

Call of Duty 4 was a fantastic game, didn't have a huge first week, but had massive legs. But most importantly, it had loyal fans/players, this in term with the massive marketing MW2 recieved, is why it did massive first week numbers and has already outsold MW1.

Gears of War on the other hand, was similar to MW1, not a massive opening, but fantastic legs. Even though Gears 2 had a much better opening, it's legs havn't been nearly as good as the first, meaning lifetime sales are going to be the same more or less. i believe this will happen to reach bigger 1st week than H3 then quickly die down

Now it's up to you which game Halo Reach will take after, but Halo is far far more popular than Gears. Both Gears 2 and MW2 has had much better opens  openings than their previous game, due to all the "legs" buyers purchasing it first day. So it shouldn't be too hard too imagin it will do 3.8+ million first week. In fact ... it's very difficult to think less than 10% of the 360 userbase is going to buy Reach, considering a massive 33% bought Halo 3 first week, and it hasn't dipped below a 25% attach rate since.

Now I'm not saying Reach will get a 30%, but COD4 with a rough 22% attach rate, MW2 managed 15% attach rate first week. yeah i quess i see it doing 4-5mill opening week but theres a chance it could do less like odst did

Lastly, whatever people say Halo > MW in terms of Xbox players. MW2 is likely to outsell Halo 3 soon (ish) 1 million lead for Halo 3, MW2 outselling it at 60k a week atm, would take 5 months at least, but up until this point, Halo 3 has had better legs than MW1, so what why are you bring up MW1? and is generally considered the definitive shooter on the 360.  Come Halo Reach, expect a bigger opening week than MW2, and better legs. Like I think bigger maybe the same or near MW2 but not legs of H3

overall i think games like halo and KZ2 are not as big as they once were i think people enjoy the modern environments/weapons/characters of games like COD Bad Company and Metal of Honor more

MW2 sold 9M in 8 weeks H3 sold 7m in double the time and MW2 wasnt even marketed as much either also MW1 sold 4.2 in 8 weeks and WaW sold 4.3 in 8 weeks you be the judge on if Halo>COD games

Ironic you pick out my typos, I'd be here all day if I had to correct your grammar

You're completely ignoring what i've said. MW2 got such a massive first week on the back of the people that bought COD4 through it's lifespan. Halo 3 launched in 2007, 11 mill install base, so saying which game got what in 8 weeks is just ....  null.

fine what about all this?

What put you off of Halo 3 but not ODST? if ODST is a over priced expansion why did you buy it on release but never bought Halo 3 yet?

I did buy Halo 3, first day, I played the campain and loved it first time around, after that I got bored. Never been a multiplayer halo guy, until firefight in ODST, which has me interested in MP in Reach. In actual fact, I've only recently become interested in MP in any games.

another fun fact reach will have about the same sale period as odst 13-14 weeks for its release year
odst sold 2.2m 1st week than another 2m during the holiday period with this info i can come to a conclusion to what reach will do

around 4m 1st week and another 2m during the rest of the holidays so i would say that it will be around 6.5m b4 the year ends no more than 7m theres also a chance it can follow in odst steps and sell 4.5-5.m b4 the years up

if it sell more than 7m b4 the years up then it can beat H3 lifetime 7m is the key number

Itll be interesting to see what happens but M$ needs to market this game as the second coming pf christ of they want sales similiar to those of halo 3. ODST had basically no marketing (as far as im aware) and that probably contributed to lower overall sales

Long Live SHIO!

Wow, thats some of the most stupid, out of this world logic that can only be an improvement when compared to a suicide cults final death speech before they take the juice laced with poison.

Note: I said the logic, not you. Although some may judge you to the same standards as your words I will not.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

Halo ODST is still selling 12k a week pre-bundle. So over the course of the next few years it probably would have still outsold Halo 1 on the original XBox. (6.43m versus 4.70m ) not bad for what most called a glorified expansion pack at $60. Now that It's bundled It's bound to sell even more. Halo ODST didn't have a giant amount of hype around it, and again most saw it as a expansion.

Reach is a brand new game with a brand new engine. It will have a stupid amount of hype, be the next game at MLG, and feature a new flavor with Mountain Dew :)

It's just that simple.

Oh yes...total ownage. I was obviously referring to xbox live mp, not lan parties. Nonetheless, many people bought the halo game for it's story and don't give two shits about a prequel. I'll be laughing come September.

What is your beef with Reach? Seriously you're just being plain ignorant if you think nobody cares about Reach and it won't come close to Halo 3 in sales. This prequel argument is laughable. Lets not compare the past of MGS on PS2 to Halo which is the flagship brand on Xbox. Halo to Xbox is Mario to Nintendo. Funny thing is what I'm reading here about people's friends not being interested is the complete opposite of what I'm experiencing. All of my friends who never purchased Halo 3 are hyped for Reach and at the moment taking turns borrowing my Halo 3 and ODST copies. I think many FPS fans are really starting to get turned off by COD's glitches and various other problems and are looking for another big FPS to sing their teeth into. Reach will bring in new fans.

Are you coming out of left field? Did you read the title of this thread? Did you read my arguments? We're having a discussion about outselling HALO 3. Because I don't think Reach will outsell Halo 3 means I have beef with it?

Prequel argument is laughable? Oh yeah because basing an argument on historical trends and data is sooo laughable compared to your assertion that Halo Reach will outsell Halo 3 because "it's Halo".

Oh yeah...everyone has the famous friends which are going to prove their argument. Really? I'm astounded you have friends that have never bought Halo 3 (i doubt they bought any halo for that matter then right? or ever played halo?) and are all of a sudden hyped for Reach....really what are they so hyped about? Halo 3 had more hype than Reach does now and your telling me Reach, the prequel, is going to outsell the game which ended the trilogy?? That's laughable.

Really please make a list of what your non-halo3 buying friends are hyped about. I'm dying to read that. =)

Based on historical trends every mainline Halo game has increased its sales by at least 2M over the last.

Halo 1: 6.5

Halo 2: >8

Halo 3: >11

Halo: Reach >13?

Also hardcore gamers have become irrelevant to this series as it has mass market appeal the same as Call of Duty series as well. So it doesn't matter what people here say about the game, as hardcore gamers they are pretty irelevant overall to the sales of the series.

Based off everything released on Halo: Reach thus far the expectation is that its going to be an even better experience than Halo 3.

  • They are going back to health + shields to bring back a sense of fear and urgency to every encounter, so it means something when the shields are low/drop.
  • They are working on improving the scale and scope of the single player, coop side of the game too which was somewhat neglected in Halo 3. Coop has become more and not less important as people have migrated to 40+" screens since Halo 1/2 were released.
  • The multiplayer is more than just Halo 3 rehashed, they have added a bunch of new gameplay modes, horde with matchmaking, and likely more than that which they haven't revealed yet.

Lastly, its not going up against any other epic FPS game this time around. Halo: Reach stands on its own as the only truely massive shooter release this year which is a change from 2007 which had two truely massive series releasing. This is Treyarch vs Bungie, and Bungie vs yet another modern warfare clone. Even if Sony games were releasing head to head vs Halo: Reach on the same platform it wouldn't change much.
