Forums - Gaming - I come not to praise Dante's Inferno, but to bury it.

I got sucked into picking the game up.  Gee, Toys R Us had a 50% off sale, and I was seeing the anime on Dante's Inferno, and thought MAYBE the trip to Hell would be worthwhile.  I had tried to defend Dante's Inferno on here.  But I can't any longer.  After actually playing it, it infuriates me.  There is NO reason for this game to exist.  I am not saying there isn't a reason for a game based on the Divine Comedy to exist, just THIS game that EA put out doesn't need to exist. Apparently some executive felt there was a need to rip off God of War and claim it is a GOOD thing.  REALLY?  Is beating a dead horse a good thing?  Is beating the horse to kill it a good thing?

All I can do to sum up the problem I see with God of Inferno by EA (or is it Dante of War) is to discuss the fountain.  Yes, the fountain is the chests from God of War.  Fine, you do that.  But explain this to me.  WHY would you have to repeatedly tap a button to get the life or manna out of the fountain?  Wait, I know, because Kratos Aligheir (Sorry, that should be Dante Aligheir, no that is Kratos period) happen to need to stuggle to open a chest.  This bit of play mechanics was said to be needed.  Ok, let me ask you this, anyone who played God of War: Did you actually enjoy repeatedly mashing a button over and over to open a chest when you play?  If the designers of God of War change that, are you upset that they do?  For me, I can't see anyone.  Well, why the heck did the makers of Dante's Inferno feel a need to copy this EXACTLY what was in God of War?

I know what, it is outright greed.  All you people who keep trumpeting about the importance of story and acting and all the stuff in movies, as being the end all and be all need to step back and think of videogames as GAMES for a moment.  I don't care how wonderful anything is with Dante's Inferno that would make it a cool MOVIE.  How can anything that is such a blatent ripoff of God of War from GAMEPLAY standpoint be allowed to stand and it be purchased and defended?

And I will call out to game designers here.  IF you are going to steal, PLEASE steal from more than one source, and take the best of what works from multiple games, and use that to make a game based on say a classic story like the Divine Comedy.  How about combine hack and slash of Devil May Cry with the dungeon looting of Diablo?  You know rip off two games and create something unique that is more true to the original story?  I am sorry, but no amount of plagerizing a single game's play mechanic will make it a suitable alternative to a console owner who can't play the game you are ripping off.

Anyhow, feel free to tell me I am wrong here.  Hey selnor, care to jump in and say how Dante's Inferno blows away God of War?  I know you posted prior saying how great the game is.  I am curious to see anyone do this.  As of now, I see Dante's Inferno as a sign of what is wrong with the videogame industry.

I played Geometry Wars the other day. Great dual stick shooter game with geometric shapes flying around. I then played I Made a Game With Zombies In It. Same controls, moves a bit slower, only with zombies. Essentially it is the equivalent of Dante's Inferno. I liked it too. Just slowing it down a little and giving it it's own environment made what is exactly the same type of game feel a little more unique. Really though the reason I liked it is because I liked Geometry Wars in the first place.

I played Robotron and Smash TV, and liked those.  I also played Geometry Wars, and found it really enjoyable.  It went in a different direction.  My feeling is that, if companies want to do a game in a genre, they need to do more with it than just reskin a game on another console.  If you look at a game and say there really isn't a reason to exist, then I see that as a problem.  An industry flooding the market with games like this will end up driving down the value of the videogame market.

And, as I see it now, it looks like EA is going to take a loss with Dante's Inferno financially.  The sales have seriously tailed off.  Now, just imagine they went in a different direction, with gameplay that took the best of multiple hack and slash titles.  Maybe they don't see this.  Maybe they actually create a franchise.

Anyhow, that is my take.

I finished Dante's Inferno last night and the last hour of the game just pissed me off. The gameplay I could forgive, but the game would just throw you into an interesting setting and then it'd be finished within minutes. The platforming is tedious and I couldn't stand the circle mash at every door. The Boss battles were to easy, the enemies got repititive and my combos stayed the same the whole game. What makes it worse is the game had some promise and the story wasn't that bad, it just seems like EA set a deadline and Visceral just struggled to meet it.

p.s. I didn't understand the ending at all...

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

The point is that EA had Dante's Inferno emulate the parts that were weak in God of War, because God of War didn't.  Their goal was to create a God of War knockoff.  Bad Company 2, which I own, can be said to be trying to do the same to FPS.  BUT, Bad Company 2 offers really good destructable environments, and offers its own flavor.  You can say that about Dante's Inferno?  Really?

And it isn't like God of War is the pinacle of perfection either.  It wasn't a perfect design.  It was really good, and was well done, but had flaws, and less than ideal ways of doing things that could be improved upon.  How about designers set out to design their own games in a GENRE, and borrow from other games?  That is what this is about.  God of War is NOT a genre.  It is a GAME in the genre of hack and slash with QTE.

When you blatently try to copy something, you end up doing things that make NO sense in your game context, because the changes you made were done just to not get sued by the game makers of the company you did.  Can you seriously say repeatedly mashing the B button to get life/manna out of a fountain made sense and was entertaining?  Can you?  Would you complain if God of War 3 gets rid of this when you go up to a chest to open it?

Hey, as you know I gave it a 10/10!

The circle mash (B Button on 360) is doing it because God of War did it.

Doobie, I saw the ending on YouTube.  Based on what I saw and what people said, if you send me a message, I can end up sharing with you my thoughts on what is going on.  It does look like a set up for a sequel though.

Actually, you can also see the ending explained on the Wikipedia page:

Yes, and on the Goes-to-11 blog every game gets at least that.  I write here about this, rather than there, because Goes-to-11 ONLY has good things to say.

I played Modern Warfare 2 and it felt like a rip off of COD4.
