Depending on the game, from 30 minutes to 5 hours.
I lately had two awesome experiences for giving a game that hadn't seemed appealing in my first try: No More Heroes (Wii) and Tales of Symphonia (the first Tales of game I ever played). God, I'm grateful I tried once again!

I agree that it has to vary genre by genre but if a game takes any longer than an hour to get interesting, I probably won't get into it.

Also, the more text thrown at me, the less time it has to get interesting. Okami comes to mind...

For me it doesn't vary by genre, if I'm not having fun in 20-30 minutes I stop playing. Which is probably why I don't like some genres like RPGs, or online FPSs.

I buy carefully and will almost never put a game down unless it's obvious I've made a huge mistake, so this almost never happens to me. Even if a game isn't great I'll normally plough through

I'm also interested in game design so that's part of the reason why I won't quite a game, too - just likes films you often learn more easily from the flaws than the perfection.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I could usually tell if its going to be good or not before I even open the case. I am that awesome.

I presume you apply that wisdom while regarding the case in the store...

I usually know what I am getting into when I buy a game, so I generally give it as much time as it needs to get good. So if I don't beat a game, the time around when I quit is usually pretty random.

It varies a lot on a game to game basis. If the controls are bad, the game needs other redeeming features, and lots of them! Some times I'm just having trouble getting into a game, but I'll give more chances to grip me if it's gotten critical acclaim or forum hype.

I've played three session of Metroid Prime now, each for about an hour I think, and the game just isn't catching on. I know it's not a bad game, but it just fails to get me hooked. I guess I'll be giving it a few more chances down the line.

i know what you mean.. i played through the entire first level and was a bit underwhelmed..

but i will try it again, i generally give a game 2 or 3 shots before i give up, rather than a number of minutes. i'll play it until i just can't bring myself to even bother with it any more, then i'll put it away. but i'll try it again when i'm in a different mood to see if its me, or the game.

These days I usually know what I'm going to like when I buy it.
Though from the time I was wrong, I'd say between 1 and 2 hours, and then the same maybe 2-3 times more over the following weeks.

I haven't bought anything really awful that I wanted to get rid of right away, at least not in the past 3-4 years.
