Order is MGS1, MGS2, MGS3, MGS4 (duh!)

But in all seriousness. The twin snakes was a....N64? game cube? version of MGS with some bonus content and redone artwork. The MGS2: Substance and MGS3: subsistence (or whatever they are called) are just re-releases with some additional content (not in game but training missions or more movies, stuff like that)

You are misinformed. Metal Gear Solid timeline is in this order: MGS3, MGS, MGS2, MGS4. If you like, you can download Metal Gear Solid Database from PSN which chronicles all events in a fashionable way. It's FREE. I would highly recommend that you play these games however.

He didn't ask for timeline order, I was making a funny

Though if you really wanna get technical it's

MGS3, MGS: PO, MGS: PW (not released yet), MGS, MGS2, MGS4 and yeah the MGS Database is worth perusing if you are interested.

And I agree with everyone else play in the order it was released because if you play chronologically (timeline wise) some of the moments in MGS3 will have less impact.

technical would be

MGS3, MGS:PO, MGS:PW. MG, MG:SS, MGS, MGS2, MGS4

If you don't want to play the earlier games then I'd suggest at least trying to look over the basic story of the series to sort of catch the jest of it. That is a mighty task though, the story is all over the place.

I played mgs1, skipped 2 and 3, and jump on mgs4. I luv it!

I watched the story summaries on one of the sites from |MGS1 to 3.ANd you will not be disconnected and u ll love it .Just like i did enjoy it without playing other MGS games

Only play MGS1. MGS2 was only ok. I absolutely hated MGS3, and had to force myself to play MGS4. That being said, MGS1 is one of my favorite games of all time. It's too bad that each game in the series got progressively worse.

Actually it's MGS3, MGS: PO, MGS: PW, Metal Gear (Nes and MSX) Metal Gear 2 (not released in America) MGS, MGS2, MGS4. I

You don't have to play the others to enjoy MGS4 but it makes the experience SO MUCH better if you have. Mainly because MGS3 is probably the best IMO.

EDIT: Actually, I take that back, MGS1 is just as good as MGS3 and MGS4 is close behind them. See this is why you should play them all because they are such good games.

I was referring to, since the question was for them specifically,  the "Solid" line of games.

I hadn't played the other games but still loved the experience.

Do research the storyline online beforehand though.

I heard MGS4 was a great game, I never played any of the previous MGS games so my question is, do I need to play the previous MGS games to fully enjoy this one? Is it worth getting if I haven't played a MGS game before?

You can just read the story, or watch cutscenes (on youtube / torrent) or watch the gametrailers story compilations. TBH getting MGS1, 2 and 3 is quiete difficult and expensive, unless you have PS2 you won't be able to play them anyway. I'd suggest to get to know the story, than play MGS 4, if you really love the game, you can allways go backwards and play those games again (I did :) )

MY HYPE LIST: 1) Gran Turismo 5; 2) Civilization V; 3) Starcraft II; 4) The Last Guardian; 5) Metal Gear Solid: Rising
