I heard MGS4 was a great game, I never played any of the previous MGS games so my question is, do I need to play the previous MGS games to fully enjoy this one? Is it worth getting if I haven't played a MGS game before?

MGS4 wasn't a great game it was the BEST GAME EVER!!

YOu definetely should play the other parts to enjoy MGS4....if you don't you'll feel disconnected from the story which is a big big big part of the game!

The Answer is yes... MGS series is very story heavy, probably the most story heavy game out there.

To get the most enjoyment, yes, play the previous ones. You don't HAAAVE to, but you might be lost without it (or the significance of certain moments will be lost).

The original MGS is only $10 on the PSN, it's a perfect place to start!

Although MGS4 is my least favorite MGS game nevertheless it is a good game and if you are a PS3 owner you should check it out
If you plan on getting tied into the series and the mind of Hideo Kojima you will need to play or read about the previous games (there are many wiki's available) or you can just play MGS4 for what it is and enjoy it

yes i think it would be very hard to like the game without knowing the story

or you could just get the MGS collection, which includes the first three games, for only $30. I'd say play them before 4 just to make the experience as grand as it can be.

But I do know several people who's first MGS was number 4 and they still love it to death.

MGS 4 is not that expensive no more so yes its worth it
