MS forces Sony to scrap 'Arc'?

Microsoft-owned trademark has affected rival's plans, say sources

A Microsoft trademark could have forced Sony to rename its PS3 motion wand.

Though it's never been officially Christened, the PS3 motion controller has been heavily tipped to be called 'Arc' - with several third-party execs coining the name.

It's emerged this morning, however, that a range of Microsoft-trademarked PC accessories of the same name could have forced Sony to change its plans.

Industry sources have this morning told CVG that Sony is considering a quick renaming of the device - to avoid potential confusion and clashes with Microsoft over the trademark.

SCEA's Patrick Seybold admitted 'PlayStation Arc' is a "rumoured codename" for the controller last month, after THQ president Brian Farrell used the Arc name in an investor call.

Of course the other name being chucked about for the PS3 wand is 'Gem', and Disney Interactive recently used it recently in public.

When contacted, an SCE spokesperson issued a straight "no comment" on our report.

I wonder what would happend if MS can stop them from using the arc name, wiil it mean that Sony´s motion controlls will be dalyed?

If so that could cause alot of trouble for Sony and that might be MS´s plan to disrupt their release plans to have Natal gain momentum and Sony´s arc loose momentum.

I have rea somewhere that they tried to patent the arc name and if they cant use it then they will have to go back and try and find a new name that is appealing and not taken by soe one else. It´s not that easy to find another name that would fit the product and at the same time have consumer appeal.

I am not saying that MS will succeed but i think thats what they are aiming for, to disrupt sony´s plans and hopefully cause a delay.

dude ut being to overdramatic.... it doesn't even say MS is pursuing this, it just SONY has noticed MS has a patient for it so they might have to rename quickly BEFORE it even reaches that issue it if indeed it is Arc. your lookin to deep into this.

If they just call it "Arc" then yea, but if they call it Playstation Arc then there is no grounds for concern.

The only reason for them to really change it at this point is if they do think it will cause confusion.

I am not being dramatcic at all, just trying to understand how such a move could benefit MS hur Sony and what it could lead too. Trying to understand the reasoning behind such a move if it is going to be made.

^ You aware. you have somehow from this simple piece of news deducted that this is a big MS conspiracy. I doubt MS will even care, just because simple things SONY could do like the poster above you pointed out to wiggle there way out assuming it is Arc and they want to keep. Not to mention the Arc isnt releasing till fall im sure they'll have a name by then.
