well we cant even say they dont like JRPG's

they gave Demons Soul a 9/10

So can we say they are on crack then?

OP - I'm sorry, and I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinnion, but that score is a load of shit. The game deserves a 7 strictly based on its production values. Obviousley critics these days have forgotten what it is to be a critic. If you hate Final Fantasy thats fine. But you can't give the game a low score because YOU hate Final Fantasy. I read the first five lines of that review and already said fuck it. It's like getting a fan of rap music to rate a death metal album. The only way he can do it is if he has extensive knowledge of death metal albums and can actually take an unbiased look at it. If you go in with the mentality "FUCK death metal I hate it" then you will deffinitley give the album a low score. That's what's sad about reviewers nowadays, they cant put their own childish biases aside.

Me playing

Wow it's pretty

Wow is it linear with boring cutscenes! So a 5 is correct

Well, it was kinda expected, plus their review isn't that bad, just that the linearity let them down big time.

Plus, they gave Dragon Age a 5 too, so FFXIII = DA:O is really awesome in my book :P

Though I didn't like DA all that much. I still say it deserves an 8.

I decided to ignore Edge as a rpg rating site after the 5 to Dragon Age which I really enjoyed. The Edge reviewers are not rpg fans and the low ratings for RPG games show that.

They have a very unique and strange way to rate RPG's. They have given good scores to most FF's before and even in this gen, they have given some good scores to RPG's as well.

I do question their rating choice in the cases of both DA:O and FFXIII, but in the content of the review, they were far more professional with the FFXIII review than with the DA:O one, as that one felt to me, at least, that they were just giving it a raw comparison to the current trend of WRPG's, instead of focusing on the strenghts and unique points of DA:O.

Current PC Build

CPU - i7 8700K 3.7 GHz (4.7 GHz turbo) 6 cores OC'd to 5.2 GHz with Watercooling (Hydro Series H110i) | MB - Gigabyte Z370 HD3P ATX | Gigabyte GTX 1080ti Gaming OC BLACK 11G (1657 MHz Boost Core / 11010 MHz Memory) | RAM - Corsair DIMM 32GB DDR4, 2400 MHz | PSU - Corsair CX650M (80+ Bronze) 650W | Audio - Asus Essence STX II 7.1 | Monitor - Samsung U28E590D 4K UHD, Freesync, 1 ms, 60 Hz, 28"

Good it deserves that rating.

JRPG as an genre has not evolved, crazy thing is, FFXIII is the game SE tried to be a little different, yet still get blasted by fans and reviewers.

thank God it's not a genre I care for.

Yeah, it seems to me that this certain genre is stuck between a rock and a hard place this generation. JRPG's haven't seen the success they've been used to for the past couple generations, especially on consoles (at least Pokemon is still going strong).

That said, I wish the best for FFXIII. I hope it pleases the fans and does well on the market (on both consoles).

pokemon isn't popular because its a JRPG (if its).

its simple one, only DQ its more simplistic.

they have no taste , JRPG especially FF are linear from a long time ago.

hell uncharted and any chapter based game is..

HALO IS LINEAR. =_=.

Just saying, different genres have different genres. Why people arew saying FF XIII is linear and stuff is because there isn't a world map and various places you can go in the story.

Still, harsh score. Isn't that the score what KH: 358/2 Days got?

Yep.  Rounding up all their SE reviews this gen...

  • Final fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) 7
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3, 360) 5

...honestly, I'm more inclined to agree than disagree with EDGE on most of these.  HD RPGs have had it pretty bad in general though (6, 5, 5, 5).

Damn, even TCB got a better score than FF XIII...

Even Project Slypheed got a higher score!

I've said it before, XIII has the most anti-hype of any game in recent memory.

xbox exclusive :p

Having now actually read what Edge said in their review and having read the others i think what they're saying is probably right on a lot of things.

People are bashing them for the score but how come it does not go the other way too?

Like for example OPM gave the game 100% calling it perfect etc.. There are a lot of dubious places these days that have been tainted by the whole cash for reviews thing.

Too many places give perfect scores or 9's when the game does not deserve it. Very few games this gen have blown me away to the same level games in the last gen had. I can probably count on one hand how many games i think this gen deserve a near perfect score (Bioshock, Mass Effect , Gears and Modern Warfare 1).
But for the most of it people seem to give high scores to pretty much everything. The fact FF13 has not got the same high scores actually shocks me. Not because it is a good game but because it is a game that generates huge hype and from one of the biggest selling franchises out there which normally means good scores.

Too many games are rushed out to try and cash in on the franchises popularity. Games like Modern Warfare 2, the game was just boring in comparison to the 1st one. But it got high scores. The same can be said of games that are slightly different to everything else, like LittleBigplanet etc.. i remember they tried to do the same thing with Scriblenauts, it even was given game of show at E3.

So i am glad some reviewers out there will still say it like they see it without the fear of offending the devs. Why is it not the same as it is for films? When we see a film if we hate it we will trash it. But with games for some reason it is different, you are not allowed to admit you hate it!

If you break the review down and look at it unbiased then it makes a lot of sense. If the game is about 60hrs long but your doing the exact same thing you did from the first hour of the game without any variety then that sounds a bit boring doesnt it? One of the draws of Final Fantasy was the content it had, ranging from the little secret things by exploring the world all the way to trying to find each characters ultimate weapons. Now you can't do any of those things. You don't even have a world to run about it. It sounds like the massive content by which SE was known for has gone. Which as the reviewer says makes the game not feel like a final fantasy game, it feels like something new but something worse.

We ourselves are slightly to blame too because when someone gives an honest review this happens. We are so used to expecting near perfect scores for the big franchises that when they don't get them we blame the reviewers when really we should be blaming the devs. FF13 looks and sounds like it was rushed out. They didn't have a story to tell they just had to make a game with the FF in the title because this gen is nearly 5 years old already and they had to get one out.

So while a lot of you will criticise edge for the score i actually aplaud them for the content of the review because they are spot on. I will still play the game regardless of reviews but it is time to stop giving games 9 or 10s just for the sake of it as it defeats the points of reviewing if you are just going to praise everything.

From My experience playing the Japanese Version of FFXIII it is more like a 9.5 at the minimum the Game has one of the best battle systems seen in ATB based RPGs and and story cool and cinematic cutseines are epic.

I couldn't disagree more with this score.

The game is a blast IMO, and i don't think i've ever played a JRPG with such amazing design and so immersive in the story department. I just feel like i'm in there with the characters.

Easily a 9 in my books.

You got it already? Unfair. I hate you.

Edge gave FFX a 6. A 5 was expected.

Edge sucks = Confirmed

Is it possible that many Western reviewers have become disinterested with the JRPG? I read reviews and much of their complaints could be applied for past games that had these very same "flaws".

It just seems that many of them much prefer what you get in games like Mass Effect. Whereas I find that series to be an absolute bore.
