Looks like EDGE liked elements of the core gameplay and battle system, but felt the linear structure and other design elements (including some in the battle system) let the side down badly.

Opinions?

I think it's a little harsh sounding based on other reviews, but they raised their points well enough I thought.

I have to say this caught me by surprise.

Given the game is technically fine, then for me it's at least limped to a 5 or 6 out of 10 right there. Reading the review I'm really surprised they didn't go for a 7 - which would be game is fine technically and okay for the genre but nothing special.

A 5 means the game has serious issues, which is pretty much going against the general views which seem to be the game is fine if somewhat linear and nothing new.

Edge gave FFX a 6. A 5 was expected.

No, a five means the game is good but nothing special. Average. Ok. Passable.

It doesn't mean it has serious issues.

Not that suprised to be honest given the history of Edge and Final Fantasy reviews. Everything we heard after the Japanese release suggested this was the sort of game Edge would score poorly. Linear, lacking originality, lots of cut-scenes etc.

So can we say they are on crack then?

OP - I'm sorry, and I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinnion, but that score is a load of shit. The game deserves a 7 strictly based on its production values. Obviousley critics these days have forgotten what it is to be a critic. If you hate Final Fantasy thats fine. But you can't give the game a low score because YOU hate Final Fantasy. I read the first five lines of that review and already said fuck it. It's like getting a fan of rap music to rate a death metal album. The only way he can do it is if he has extensive knowledge of death metal albums and can actually take an unbiased look at it. If you go in with the mentality "FUCK death metal I hate it" then you will deffinitley give the album a low score. That's what's sad about reviewers nowadays, they cant put their own childish biases aside.
