Guys my mates PS3 was affected. He lost saves as well. He has been told to send his into Sony. And that he wont be able to have his saves back or trophies, because he never had it online. Apparantly they are sending some free stuff. I'm reading alot in the news about non online PS3 players basically screwed. Is this right?

Online or not your already saved games are not effected at all, it just that they change date if you saved anything that day and since the date is changed your PS3 will recognize them as old saves.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

You're not serious, right? You can't be serious...

The front page? Slow news day it seems.

Yup.  The only saves that could be affected (so far as I understood) where one's made with dates borked.  If he's never gone online and synced (nor backed up his PS3) then he may have lost Trophy's I guess.  Too bad but if you never use any of the available tools to backup what you have then you are somewhat asking for trouble whether we're talking a PS3, PC, 360 or whatever.

Sounds to me like a real extreme case as my PS3 went borked on date, I re-set it, left it off for the day (my wife was happy if no-one else) and the next day, as happens often with date based errors, everything was fine.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
