| SaviorX said: The lack of interest is due to a combination of things: It took too long to release- After it was announced that FF13 would be on the 360, it probably should have come out on both consoles that December after E3, where the title would've still been buzzing. Now, however, gamers are tired of waiting, and what they have now leaves them unsure of whether it is actually good enough to be worth the years of wait. The hype has died The mishmash reviews- Recent details of the title further divide the views of the fanbase. Some welcome the changes, others don't. That is what unfortunately happens when a game is different from each iteration, that no group of people can agree to like the same things about it. Great games, already here: Maybe a year or 2 ago when there were new IPs abound, the ol' franchise could've had a welcome return, but now some games are on their 2nd iterations while this mainline FF just joined the current-gen fracas. In the meantime the game was being "perfected", people found other things to play. Poor advertising: A large part of the reason FF7 was so popular back in the day was because there were ads, EVERYWHERE. Outside of those who roam the websites, no one even knows FF13 is coming out. Plus, let's be honest, it is starring a woman in the lead role. Some gamers hate Cammie Dunaway just because she is female, no matter what she does, and the same thing could apply here. People may want an effeminate boy rather than a strong-willed girl. Also, the game itself has become victim to the fanboy wars, where instead of being a game, it was just a device used to argue over the PS3/360 wars and be a e-penis measuring stick between fans. All people argued over was whether one version hampered the other, which one is ever so slightly the better-looking one, and other nonsense. Now that the release is here, there is not much left to argue over, and people are left disinterested. In deciding to choose a console to buy it for, some gamers may wait to get it, if they will at all. "WRPGS are better" - This gen has been more nationalist than ever before, and now barely anything Japanese gets much respect from Western teams or media. Look at the recent Toyota debacle. Just like news/car companies are seizing the moment of Toyota's weakness by blowing their recalls WAY out of proportion, their native products receive more attention, and the same thing applies here. JRPGs, whether they are good or not (most have probably been lame, IDK) have been getting low ratings the entire generation. Shooting FF13 in the head reviewwise may solidify what Western/European game creators/journalists may have wanted to see all along, and that was some respect, on a global scale, for their own titles. This is why Bioware is heralded and Square Enix is clowned lol For a game that is supposed to be huge, FF13 isn't being treated like it, and its sub 1-million debut (which appears will happen in NA) on TWO consoles will prove that. Square Enix especially and the gaming industry to an extent really dropped the ball. |
My sentiments exactly.

im not hyped, and i will wait to see many reviews before i decide to buy this game, EE has become a stupid company and this final fantasy has lost many of the key RPG elements, to me FFXIII looks like a FFX-II version of FFXII which is like saying a bad version of a bad game.

Hey Listen!
Taking reviews for JRPGs this gen? Good luck with that. Every one of them must really suck then.

Those are your sentiments exactly? WRPG's are better? Bioware better than Square Enix? A woman in the lead role isn't a good idea??? The game should've come 5 months after it was announced for 360? What...the......fuck? Did you even read his post? How could they announce and complete the game for 360 in under 6 months when they were not even done the PS3 version yet? They worked on it for this long and still people are bitching about the smallest differences between the PS3/360 versions.
Under 1 million debut when the game already debuted three months ago to over a million sales in one day??? How can it be a sub million debut if the sales in NA and EU for the week starting on March 8 will only get added to the Japanese sales? When it's all said and done, the FFXIII week one sales count will be approximately 1.5-2 million... depending on if we want to count 360 numbers. Maybe even more. Only handful of games have done that this gen...especially on PS3.
Like I said earlier in this thread, the only ppl who aren't hyped for this game are the people that were never hyped for this game. If you like WRPG's better and don't have an interest in JRPG's, then great...thats cool. But don't pretend like you were sooo hyped for this game and suddenly you're having cold feet in the last week. If you look around this community, you will see that most people are as hyped as ever:
VGChartz Most Wanted: February - Final Fantasy XIII is at #1, completely drilling games like Zelda Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3 and, dare I say, the still exclusive FFvsXIII. In fact, It has been at #1 six times in the past year I believe. The only time it has been pushed to #2 was right before Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Conduit were about to release. In other words, ever since VGChartz started doing a most wanted list, Final Fantasy XIII has been in the top two every month.
And please don't bring reviews into it. I know you guys can judge a game for yourselves. Like Wagram said, taking JRPG reviews from Western reviewers has now become a joke. Not to mention the game currently sits at 83, putting it at or near the top of the JRPG list for this gen. And I'll even go out on a limb and say I think that the metascore will come up to at least 85.
EDIT - Two hours after I made this post the metacritic score was re-adjusted to 85!!! So now I will go out on a limb and say 88-89 is even possible.

I don't want to ruin all your optimism, but 'internet hype' and 'general hype' (as in, the general public) are two different things. People on a forum like this clicking on a radio dial to say they want a certain game the most may show a vague example of what they are thinking of buying. But it in no way is an accurate example of what they are really going to do. And it is LEAGUES away from showing what the people 'at large' are going to do, because 90% of people don't sit around surfing web forums and keeping tabs on gaming news like us. They just buy games when they see them on the shelf or hear its out from a friend. And its very hard to guess hype based on that.
Aside from all these points, you cannot deny that FFXIII is seeing a lot less interest leading up to its release than pretty much any other FF before. Its getting a lot of media attention and almost on a daily basis there's some kind of 'news' story (controversial or otherwise). But many people aren't looking for it all. They are either just waiting for the game to (finally) come out or have just given up caring. And considering there's a number of major games out there as big or even biggerthan FFXIII now, you can understand why. Back when FFX came out, it was the big chesse. When FFXII, it had some competition, but it was still on everyones list. Now....FFXIII is looking like something people need to decide to buy next to God of War 3, Mass Effect 2 and Bayonetta. And now with some of these reviews, some people are losing even more interest.
Frankly, I think people should just ignore reviews, like I always say. But heck, I can't blame them this time, seeing as how the game has taken 5 years to get to this point and some people have been waiting nearly this long just for any word on the game. And all the 'gameplay' footage doesn't help, as most of it is just FMV teasers.

I was agreeing about the hype. Where are the commercials? Where are the online ads? Where are the trailers? Why isn't the front page of IGN taken over by Final Fantasy XIII yet? Square enix has done a piss poor job of hyping me for this game. And about releasing the game 6 months from the E3 release, I'll just say next time we meet in real life I'll explain to you my beef about the game's dev cycle. And he's not saying Western RPGs are better, he's saying the media thinks as much. As I said before you're going to loose your bet about Final Fantasy having a higher meta critic than Mass Effect and it's not because Mass Effect is the better game.

But the game already had a million+ openning day so trying to say that there is no hype for it is not true...It's on every gaming web site and I'm sure we'll bee seeing online ads soon. As far as TV ads go, I direct you to the front page of this site where a bunch of TV trailers have been posted. TV trailres which have aired and will continue to air in the coming days....
I may pick it up eventually, but same as the OP says, yes I'm a HardCore long fan of FF yet I am totally unhyped.
