Forums - PC Discussion - is there any way to get old game to run on 64-bit windows 7?

i trying to get some old games like space empires III and stars! (civilizatio- in-space type of games i played years ago) to run on my computer, and it won't work. it says it's not compatable with this version of windows and to see which version i need and contact the software publisher to get it.

i'm running 64_bit windows 7 right now btw, and i'm just wondering if there some way to make it work. i've already tried going to properties and messing around with compatability mode with an older version of windows, and it doesn't woek.

I think there's something called Dos Box or some such that's useful for this? Not really sure.

When do you get the error? During install or when trying to run the executable?

If you are getting it during install, it is probably because the installer is 16-bit, support for which was dropped in 64-bit versions of Windows. The solution to that problem is installing it on another machine running a 32-bit Windows and copying it over. Even if you don't have a 32-bit Windows machine, I'm sure one of your friends or a family member does.

If you are getting errors when running the executable, you might be out of luck. I run Vista x64 and most games from that time period work, but it is possible that some of the old Windows APIs are no longer supported in 7. If you post the exact error I might be able to give you more information.

installing it on an old computer and moving it over worked. thanks john :)
