A book that I should have mentioned earlier is The Stand by Stephen King.I find most of his work mediocre but this is one of his early novels, and for me sets an example on how modern literature should be.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Alex Hailey its a lot more detailed then Spike Lee's movie Malcolm X. Pretty much all books that get turned into movies are better then the movie except for a few exceptions.
The Hunger Games and the sequel, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
Read the first one and loved it, read the first 7 chapters of the latter so far and seems to be just as good. There is also a third book coming out on August 24th called Mockingjay and it will complete the trilogy. The books are very well written with good pacing, well developed cast of characters, exciting plot with shockingly mature themes such as death, government corruption, class stuggle, etc. It's young adult fiction so you will know where to find it. The series is very popular and acclaimed and the first one is being adapted into a movie with a script rumored to be written by Suzanne Collins herself.
Hah, I'm a super fantasy nerd!

Favorite Fiction:
Anything by Tim O'Brien

Life of Pi - Yann Martel
Lamb - Christopher Moore (This should be sacreligious and cruel, but it is so sweet and endearing, it really is mind numbingly good)
Favorite non-fiction:
