Forums - Gaming Discussion - Sony: PSN Is 'A Lot More Egalitarian' than Xbox Live

To this day, the thing that still irks me most about the PSN is the lack of an included microphone. There are still too many silent gamers online.

Other than that, Sony has done a hell of a job improving the service... but I'll never, EVER understand the point of Home.

That's not a problem with PSN, but with Sony not including it with a purchase of a PS3.

I think it's good. Not everybody is into multiplayer and therefore needs a mike.

That's like saying Sony should have saved money and not included wireless in the console... after all, not everyone wants to go online.

The more peripherals included in a console purchase, the higher likelyhood of their use. To round out their "online experience" that they wanted to push so much, a microphone should have come with the console. After all, isn't their tagline "It does everything."?

what re you talking about? PSN supports mics, that they don't include a $5 cheap one it's another thing, the machine supports bluetooth and there are cheap bluetooth headsets, from moto, nokia, sony ericsson etc.

the machine it's already built with tons alot of microsoft/nintendo have in their hardware, many 360 dont have wifi/bluetooth  or blu ray in it, expensive accesories, ps3 power cable it's even a standard pc cable.

actually not having wifi it's actually more annoying.

In terms of working with third parties to offer content, I can see the angle he might be coming from.

Sony allows developers to self-publisher games on PSN, similar to Steam. Microsoft does not. This is why Trine was initially pc/ps3 only until Atlus stepped in and offered to publish it on XBL.

Sony also has no problems with free DLC, unlike Microsoft.

I prefer the one that allowed me to watch seasons 1-5 of "The Office" with my Netflix account for nothing beyond my $8.99/month subscription fee.

Also I haven't used the 360 Netflix for quite a while but has it changed? I ask because from my experience the PS3 version is substantially better, especially when I don't have to go onto Netflix.com, add a movie, then boot up the console just to watch something. PS3 Netflix gives me the ability to browse multiple genres and lists shows/movies similar to those in my instant queue.

Is the 360 version like this now or is it still only allow you to watch what was added from your PC to your instant view queue?

The 360 version has been updated for quite some time.  You might want to give it another shot.  I have found performance to be significantly better than on the PS3.

You still need internet connection to get updates for your games (firmware you can get via flashcard, but the mainstream consumer may not know that, not getting an notice in the first place without the internet connection).

Like I said, there are people who want to play online and use mics, and those who don't. There is absolutely nothing to stop those interested in the full online experience to get out and buy a mic. Although you are right in that including the mic will encourage users to, I believe that if the people weren't willing to go out and buy a mic on their own with their own money, they shouldn't be forced to buy a mic (or force Sony to eat up the cost of providing the mic at a free or lower cost).

omg you guys with the mic/headset problems etc... any headset can work with the ps3. sony gives the consumers the right to choose any headset if they want one or not.

Let's see...XBL is $50 a year, and MORE people are using it then the FREE PSN...lol...seems like they are NOT equal.

That's not true at all.

Perhaps not, but trying to start a class war isn't either.
