It was not till years later that knew it was not Nintendo who made it. 1. Did not really matter who did it was fun. 2. I got it with a subscription to Nintendo Power. 3. I was 7-9 when I got it.

You got it with a subscription to Nintendo Power? Lucky bastard! My folks HATED video games, and wouldn't even get me games much less magazines about games.

Yea My mom was kind of a game pusher, it kept me and my brother form fighting and carrying on. OH and she was and still is addicted to Tetris and Dr. Mario.

haha my mom is a huge Dr. Mario player too.. What is it with moms and Dr. Mario?

She kicks my ass at it too.

So I get the feeling a lot of you think FXIII is going to bomb in US/OTHERS?

Well, what do you consider a bomb?

Is around 7 million worldwide too low? If DQ can sell 2 million in the west (which is a lot, but since it's Nintendo expectations are high), with 4.5mil or so in Japan, that's near 7 million total.

I don't think it'll stay above FFXIII, but I think it'll be pretty close.

I don't think its going to bomb.  I just don't think its going to do 5-7 million like many people/SquareEnix hopes its going to do.  Which it'll HAVE to do to 'sell better than FFVII' like SquareEnix and many other people are projecting.  And on the HD systems...and with JRPGs on the decline...yeah, not going to happen.  Right now, people are more inclined to go out and buy Dragon Age or download Morrowind off Steam than buy something like Final Fantasy XIII.  At least in America.  Sad to say, but its true.

Now, does this mean I think Dragon Quest will be magically immune to the JRPG curse?  Hardly.  In fact, its going to be 1000x harder to sell the series.  However, if a company (such as Nintendo) is willing to work at hyping the series, it may just be able to be that one series that can become successful in America and Europe despite peoples newfound prejudice for 'JRPGs'.  Because more than any other JRPG....its more like a WRPG in design.  But before people can find that out, they need to try the series.

Question, did they ever go 3D with DQ or is it still 2D sprites? I'm currently playing DQ4 on my DS and that will officially be my most recent Dragon Quest game I've played.

what is the track record of DQ outside of Japan?

FF will sell on it's name alone, I really don't know how much though.

7 million is good number,

2 million on 100 million userbase should not be too hard with actual advertisement.

who cares, the only winner is SE.

Dragon Quest VIII on the PS2 was when they went 3D, with full Cel Shaded animation utilizing Akira Toriyamas style.  See link below.  All the games following have been in 3D, including the remakes on DS.  Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker followed in the same Cel Shaded style of Dragon Quest VIII for the DS and was fully 3D with no random battles (enemy encounters were inacted on screen much like Chrono Trigger/Xenogears).  Dragon Quest IX is following in the same tradition of gameplay, though it is not cel shaded.  Dragon Quest Swords on the Wii also utilized similar graphial style to Dragon Quest VIII, through it was an on rails arcade style hack-n-slash adventure game.

The only games since Dragon Quest VIII that wasn't 3D was Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS) and a Cell Phone remake of Dragon Quest III only for Japan.

The publisher makes little difference to me, other than knowing that it should have ample stocking and provide club Nintendo coins. If I decide to get into this series again, I'll probably start with DQV. I did love Dragon Warrior III and IV back in the NES days.

I was going to get it anyways. I liked IV, loving V, and will jump on VI when that hits out shores.

I'm a little skeptical either way, whether Nintendo did it or not.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Of course I am, it's Nintendo.
