Forums - Sony - Sony: Our Motion Control Approach Is Better Than Microsoft's

I think that the Arc (without holding the DS3 in one hand) will be more succesful then natal in the long run definetly. I have just the feeling it will be better accepted. I said it one thousend times and I say it again. Without anything in the hand the controls will fell awkward and the concept wont be as succesful all casuals will stay with the Wii definetly. And playing FPS without controller will be a fail also racing games and Fighting games. Thats the strength of the PS wand it could actually be great to play with (with a Nunchuck type device).

I cant wait for the outcome. I think that the theory of natal sounds better then the reality. Just try it for yourself sit in front if your tv and pretend you are steering a car and accelarate with widening the space between your hands.

Classical concepts like FPS will fail with natal or atleast I cant imagine how this could work. maybe there are some concepts which were not used before which are better with Natal but aslong as Natal controlls wont be better then the Xbox controller it will be senseless to use them. I finally want some real informations about the two concepts we still know nothing about natal or arc. Based on the information I know yet I see Arc beeing the bigger success.

I see the Hype has done a good work but somehow i am sure most of the people will be disappointed.

I want to play it finally I give a shit about it beeing a new technology (its not true anyway)
It should be a good way to control your games and that is not enough it should be as good as a Controller but even that wont be enough so it has to be actually better (at least in some games) then a controller.

My point was that it is strange to see so much publicity on an unfinish product that we know almost nothing of. The wand is far from being publicize as much as Natal. You dont find that funny to see an unrelease tech in a TV episode or being called innovation of the year. How did they know? Im not too sure why you were asking my point in the manner you did tho. I wasnt saying wand is better or anything.

Because that is what this thread is about.

Natal is revolutionary in every single way.

I never said Natal is not revolutionary. My point was that it is strange that an un-release product get so much publicity and is claim innovation of the year. In person, if someone tells you something, do you answer with something not related to what he was saying? Now, if you want to tells me why you think theres so much publicity and hype for an un-release product I would be glad. I think that MS may pay or have good friends to receive this kind of threatment, thats my opinion, what yours?

This is always the last straw. MS paid them...

It is not like nobody has ever played this. This is not true, there were dozens of journalists playing Natal and the very most of them were amazed. I haven't seen anybody who actually played Natal and said it did not work.

I doubt MS paid time magazine (probably one of the most reliable magazines in the world), eurogamer, IGN, forbes, Jimmy Fallon etc.
And that was just the media. MS must have paid Hideo Kojima, Inafune and Nagoshi as well, because they loved Natal, too.

And while we are at it, they probably paid Sugar Ray Leonard, Eric Dickerson, Willie Gault, Paul Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, The Game etc. All of them played with Natal and liked it. Look for it at youtube.

Natal has not delivered YET, but it is the most promising peripheral I have ever seen.

OK, i cant help it. You used the gadget show?... They have never attacked unreleased tech and never will. There is a reason why the cameras were not allowed in. I doubt you have seen Natal up and running for yourself, If you have then I'm sorry. He does have a point though, Innovation of the year!!?? its over kill in hype and very risky strategy.

I doubt MS paid or anything in that manner.  But it's very, very likely they instigated the coverage.  Very little you see on shows like Gadget review shows, celeb opinions, etc. is driven from the show/celeb end but the company that wants the exposure.

This is simply good PR and marketing and shows MS have people looking at the market, making calls and arranging for good coverage.  I've worked with our PR a few times (I work for a very large tech company) to help with shows, etc. and I was amazed how much networking and calling around drives that side of things.

However, MS is quite right to be contacting all manner of shows, people, etc. and suggesting they cover or look at Natal.  The real question I think is why Sony seem to be so poor at this, particularly considering their position in the industry.  They produce electronic devices - the should have all the contacts and be all over these shows, etc. for coverage.

So either Sony don't feel ready in the tech/software yet to show it, MS are just more willing to show stuff earlier, or Sony have much poorer PR and Marketing around PS3/Arc... or a combination of the lot.

I definitly agree with you, its very good PR to be able to make a product be represent in all kinds of magazine and stuff. Its not bad if they did pay for stunt like smallville (and they probably did), its business, and very good business actually. I wanted some person too realize tho, that it is PR, its not because Natal is on smallville, or that magazine talks about it, that the product is "awesome" or will beat the other company. That was actually my main point. I dont remember who, but someone said that it is better because everyone is talking about it while they dont give shit about sony arc. So my main point was to make him realize how it works and that it doesnt necesarily mean that. He could have gave many different opinion on why he thinks that Natal is better than Arc. But, saying it is better because magazine talks about it or because it is on smallville is not a good conclusion. It always depends on how the company is hyping the thing, whos their friends, where do they place money and the current success the company have related to the area. To complete my point: do you think that magazines or TV series will hype Natal in Japan? No! Do you think they will hype Sonys Arc? Yes! Does that mean Sonys Arc is better than Natal? Obviously no!

Between, Im sure by your post, that you do understand how PR works. I simply wanted to clarify my point of view. I think Sony are probably waiting to have more software to show before contacting and taking agreement. If not, then I dont understand what they are doing. I mean, outside the video game business, people dont know that Sonys is coming with a Wii kind device, which is bad.

No, it wont. imo.

Cool.  Good points which I can easily agree with.

PR and Marketing's job is to try and foster interest and the view that something is desirable, etc.  It doesn't automatically follow that whatever it is - Natal in this case - really is amazing and the best, etc. and you're right people would be wiser if they approached the hype big companies are often very good at generating with a little more caution.

I think you're right, MS wanted a big build of interest in Natal and made the decision to push for a lot of coverage when all they were really showing was maybe one game (the ball one) and some tech demos.  Sony seem to have decided to keep things quieter for the moment.  I got the feeling when they showed at E3 it was somewhat reluctantly, more because they felt they had to than they particularly wanted to.

It may be true that sony and microsoft are releasing these well after the wii has launched, but it will be the first time that a consumer gets to experience a motion sensing based game in hd using the graphical prowess of the ps3/360, and while Im no graphic whore by any means, gameplay always wins out over looks any day, it will be interesting to see how this turns out and what kind of games they can come out with, im just saying that if something like zelda were made for the ps3/360, Id shit my pants. I know that cant happen, but a game of that calibur that we can only experience on the wii would be epic.

Still stuck in 2005 eh?

Graphical prowess means bupkus.
If it meant something Nintendo would not be the market champ worldwide today.

Wii & DS destroyed that argument forever.
"The time when horsepower alone made an important difference is over." Satoru Iwata, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nintendo Company, Limited, at the 2004 Electronic Entertainment Expo.

In Japan, the leading systems are the handhelds. Handhelds are ALWAYS graphically behind the home consoles.
In Japan, the PSP is doing better than the PS3.
In Japan, the DS is doing better than the PSP.
In Japan, the Wii is doing better than the PS3.

In early 1980s United States, Atari 2600 did better than the Mattel Intellivision.
In early 2000s United States, the PS2 did better than the XBox.

When does it sink in?
How many more records will the Wii & DS have to break before you understand?

HD is dead. NXE killed it. Natal killed it. Arc killed it.
Even the proponents of the HD systems don't believe in that market philosophy anymore.
They're either losing too much money or stagnating too much to hold to that mentality.
Both Microsoft & Sony left HD to die...
...they did so because the market dictated that it be so.

Neither Natal nor Arc will stop Nintendo's Revolution. They are only converts to this industry shift Nintendo initiated.
This is Nintendo's house. And sooner or later the competitors & their cohorts will have their backs broken when the Ol' School Revolution is finished. This is the last year for this stubborn resistance. In the end, they will concede.

The 8th gen will be unlike any generation we have ever seen before it.
It will not be a power race. It will be an innovation race.
But that generation is long off from here. And you will not see it until the others finally give up this lust for horsepower.

When it's all said & done, the others will admit Nintendo's vision was the correct one all along.
John Lucas

Apparently move and natal both need some work according to this article.

I hope they put support into it, I dislike the ps3 standard controller, and it looks like the wii mote so... I hope it gets support.

I'm a big sony fan but I am not completely sold on the whole motion controller idea...I have a wii and I would prefer the controller...
