I doubt that it is worse than VR. I haven't played VR to know, but I own other uber-trash games like Two Worlds, and Deadly Premonition is FAR better than that.
Here is my little writeup from about 3hrs of gameplay:
- Resident Evil 4/Dead Rising style controls...Love it or hate it. L-stick moves your character, while R-stick allows you to pan around to view areas. If you want to fire, you hold R-trigger to bring up your weapon (ala dead rising), with L-stick aiming, and A to fire. Certainly clunky compared to a Gears of War-style game, but comparatively, it is not much different than Resident Evil 5.
- Graphics are mediocre, depending on what you want out of the game. I haven't seen many graphical errors (pop-in, glitches in the textures, frame rate drops), but the graphics are early 360 era. Probably on par with most Wii titles.
- Game is incredibly bizzare. I mean that in a good way. Its not that it doesn't make sense, its just really bizzare. There is a Silent Hill-esque alternate world going on, that is populated with monsters, all the while a normal world exists. The hero talks to himself (I get the impression the game is shattering the 4th wall and alludes to the player)
- Lots of cheezy, yet enjoyable, dialogue. The game feels like its straight out of the 80's with some of the cliches'. When driving, the playable character makes references to all kinds of 80s movies. Tremors FTW!
- Game world is friggin huge! Larger than Grand Theft Auto IV! Really a shocker. Its not as populated as one would hope, but it takes awhile to drive across, and there are tons of little secrets lying around.
- Driving is clunky, as the mechanics aren't realilisitc. It is not that it is 'hard' to drive, just that your turn radius sucks horribad.
- Music is hilarious. You'll be somewhere creepy, and it'll start playing an upbeat melody.
- The game has a lot of interesting considerations: You must eat and sleep to survive. You have to go to places by certain times of the day to ensure you progress. Unlike other games, time is 1:1. So if you have 5 hours to get somewhere...You litterally have 5 hours to get there!
And so on. Every survival horror fan should get this. At $20, you either will love it, or at least enjoy it enough to justify the price.
Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
